I've been using BIAB for Windows for years, but I just switched to Mac. I used the Roland VSC with Windows, but it doesn't work with Mac. I preferred it over the Coyote Forte. Can someone suggest a good software synth to use with Mac?

No conclusions here, just discussions. Does someone know of a software synth that's comparable to the the Roland VSC that will work with Mac?

When you say "software synth", do you mean "free software synth"?

Of course free would be good, but I'd play if I have to. A demo would be good before I spend the money.

Unfortunately, there is no "good" GM compatible software synth on Mac.
For low/medium quality you can use Apple DLS Synth (QT Music Instruments).
I'm not sure if it's much worse than VSC.
For high quality you need to build a special/limited configuration with eg. Logic or Kontakt.

Yes, Logic (pro) and Kontakt are good choices, but a little pricey ($500 and $400). A decent alternative is IK Multimedia's Sonic Synth 2 or Sampletank 2. They both run about $200. But, if I was in your shoes, I'd probably go with Logic Express 9. It also goes for $200. And like it's big brother Logic Pro, it gives you access to the built-in EXS24 sampler, can use any other Mac AU or VST, and it's a complete, and pretty sophisticated recording application.
