The finest things in life are usually not appreciated by the masses.

Well, I found the article somewhat cynical to say the least. But not having chosen a carreer in music I may not be the best to judge.

I do have some friends who went the academic route to perfect their skills in music and they would tell me that "...we do this because it is all we can do!". By this they mean; that music is an ART and therefore musicians (and I include Jazz players within this category ) are ARTISTS. Artists don't do things based on logical analysis but rather based on some inner calling.

So I don't worry about the folks that go down this road, in some ways I actually admire following your calling or dream. There are worse ways to spend you life.

But we are the masses, just individual parts that see life uniquely. Just like each grain of sand when viewed from a distance has no individual nature, under a microscope maybe a diamond.
And yes, being and artist is both a blessing and frustration, but it is all we want to do or can do. Wyndham

I did not know whether to laugh because it is true. And I did not know whether to cry... because it is true!

I choose laughter, for this is a comedic piece of epic proportions.

Truth is funny, when told like it is here.

It doesn't just apply to jazz - it applies to all artistic and performance fields. Or is 'jazz' a euphemism for that now?

Very true words for the most part.
That said, we don't do it for the money.
I think musicians are the most underpaid folks in almost any field.
My hat goes off to all those hear and everywhere who make the world a better place by making music just because they love it. Rock on.

Yes, just as no single raindrop believes it is the cause of the flood.

It's the same way with lots of entertainment. We've gone from having to go see plays, to movies, to TV, then videos of various formats.

Music has become a ubiquitous commodity. Just one hundred years ago, if you wanted music, you had to go hear someone play, or play it yourself. Now you can carry 10,000's songs in our pocket. Supply and demand has devalued live music. But live music is ALWAYS best!
