PC World repeats the advice to stay with the installed XP that comes on new netbooks, instead of trying to load Windows 7 on it.

Thank you, Matt.
I figured it would have to be the "behind the scenes" processes where improvements were found. The Microsoft videos did not address any of these. It just touted the neat things you could do with it as a simple 13 year old end user wouyld enjoy.
Matt, on the topic of performance, I do not use my recording desktop for internet use. What types of experiences in performance, apart from internet use, did you notice different coming from Vista to 7? Or, is it a value to the gamer? It is my thought that the trend of these performance improvements and its stability is primarily directed to those who do gaming and other processor intensive activities. Would that assumption be correct in this case?

The "behind the scenes" improvements are real but subtle. The most substantial improvement I have seen in benchmarks is an increase in hard drive access speed, i.e. most programs (except those from Adobe) load faster.
I have noticed no difference whatever in recording. I don't do games, so I can't speculate about that. Stability is MOST important in a DAW, and Windows 7 is better.

My first love of Windows 7 over Vista is the UAC. I, and most everyone I know, HATES the Vista UAC. I have it turned off, but I still get bugged about it every time I start my computer. In Windows 7, you turn it OFF, and it's OFF!
Secondly, I don't feel it's such a resource hog as Vista. Windows 7 is what Vista should have been to start with. I would have even accepted Win 7 as Vista SP2.
For me, it's seamless with 64 bit CPUs. Vista is, for the most part, also, but I can run Win 7 on everything from a single core 64 bit AMD to a Quad Core AMD 64 bit, and everything inbetween. I suspect that when I upgrade my Netbook to 2GB of RAM, I won't have any issues running it on a 1.6GHz Atom processor, either. By the way, the Win 7 compatibility adviser says Win 7 will run just fine on my Netbook, and will even run Aero.
For those that are interested, I've run COD 4 (Call of Duty) on the 3000+ 64 bit single core AMD and it wasn't bad. My video card sucked, but the game didn't seem to have any issues. I also run that as a COD 4 server, with multiple connections to it, and it hasn't done anything bad, no crashes or stuff.
For those who are not running Vista, or are running a 32 bit version of Vista, and wish to upgrade to a 64 bit version of WIn 7, I say wait a couple of months. If you have a version of Vista that you like, i.e., 64 bit Home Premium, then upgrade to 64 bit WIn 7 Premium, I think you'll enjoy it.

Windoze 7, 32 bit Love to get it, cause I still have one desktop that crashed on an XP redo (without a boot disk), and now won't even recognize a third party CD I used previously to get the computer to boot into a periform rescue disk) What gives with this problem??...now I have a machine's CD that won't read rescue disks!! Almost make me want to upgrade to "7", but I'm not even sure, if I buy the upgrade to my non-working PC that it will even be "seen" in my CD drive so that I can install "7". -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Also I just saw that Microsoft has this program that it says will run many productivity applications on a virtual Windows environment, whatever that means, on computers that are still not upgraded from XP---not including XP Pro. What gives with this Virtual Product????..... with this approach (can one get away with op's that are Xp but running with more smooth "7" Applications??? Another Win 7 question...
I haven't seen the answer to this one on the Win 7 site...
I'm running XP Pro and so have to do a "clean" install if I go to Win 7. All I have read is that I should get an external HD to back up all my files so that I can bring them back in once the install is complete. Here is my question... I have always had 2 hard drives in my system... (drive C and drive D) I have always kept my most important files on the D drive and have never had a problem keeping them whenever I did a "clean" install of XP. If I were to upgrade to Win 7... could I keep and get back all my files if I did it the same way... get them off the D drive instead of having to get an external drive?

I don't see why that wouldn't work.
To be extra safe, simply temporarily disconnect the second drive from the mobo while installing the new OS.

I read some advice on a Tech forum this week that advised against upgrades of OS's. He recommended doing a clean install of the OS (not an upgrade) and use a new Hard Drive to install the version, leaving the current intact and out of the machine when trying the new version.
But that seems like an expensive and overcautious approach. Mac, I do like the possibility of using my C and D drives like Bobby wants too. However, I'm still not convinced I should try 7 yet.

I'm waiting, as I always do, for things to sort out before taking the plunge.
Then, I'll likely do what I always have done, keep the old box running the old OS and pick up a new one that has the new OS installed on it already, then run both side by side for awhile. Always have the old box, "old reliable" handy just in case, so work can get done.

Joan, I have done exactly that, get a new hard drive and install a fresh Windows 7 on it when it was the only drive. Then I connected my old drives and have access to everything, as well as a backup OS.
Hard drives are incredibly cheap now.

I was at my local computer store the other day, fulling intending on buying Win 7. The guy said, "what version do you want?" I asked him what his prices were and he rattled them off. But before I could say anything more, he asked me how my XP machine was running - any problems? I said that it was running great... has never been better, ever since I did a major upgrade last summer. He said, "upgraded last year, huh? Lemme see... what's that in dog years?" Sure makes you feel good when you hear that... heh...
Anyway... he said that if XP is running so great, why did I want to change? I told him of my concerns that Microsoft would be stopping it's support for XP. He told me not to worry about that - I'd still be getting the support for at least another year... until Win 7 proves itself. (can you say "Vista?") He said that there still are a lot of drivers unavailable for Win 7... but hardware/software companies are working to get them out. The gist of it is that he said to wait... don't change over until you have to. Pretty neat coming from someone who would be making money selling it to me but telling me not to buy it.
