Untill recently I almost always used the Sonar synths in BIAB - they are good. I finally hooked up my RD 700sx keyboard and surprize - it blows away everything else I have tried. So I now always use the Roland RD 700 as my external synth with BIAB. Many of my jazz style backing tracks use only real tracks typically just bass and drums. When I start rendering I am forced to switch my synth option back to dxi for rendering even though all I want is a rendering of real tracks. Seems like a minor inconvenience. Why not allow rendering real tracks only when these ARE ALLTHAT ARE DESIRED?
Any one that has a high quality piano should try it out. It is less convenient with re-rendering etc but the quality is well worth the effort!

Yes, a good hardware MIDI synth is a wonderful thing to have, I agree. I'm currently still loving my Ketron SD2 here, but have used a whole shelf of various mfr's devices with BIAB over the years, keyboards and standalone synths.
As for the Automatic Rendering, it apparently is a function of the DXi synth and that is why the DXi synth must be invoked first.
When I do it, it automatically selects the VSC DXi synth and then when the rendering is done, it opens the MIDI Output window automatically so I can uncheck the Use DXi button and am back to my original setup.
Not as painful as I might have imagined, actually, and it does get the job done, but it would be nice to have a simple "Audio Only Mixdown" button somewhere. That would be a good thing for you to add to the BIAB Wishlist, I think.

Agreed. I have a Roland Fantom XR synth. When I first encountered this process, I aborted it, thinking that using a DXi when I wanted to save audio Real Tracks made no sense. I wondered if others had the same reaction.
BIAB 2025 Win Audiophile. Software: Studio One 7 Pro, Swam horns, Acoustica-7, Notion 6, Song Master Pro, Win 11 Home. Hardware: Intel i9, 32 Gb; Roland Integra-7, Presonus 192 & Faderport 8, Royer 121, Adam Sub8 & Neumann 120 monitors.

Mac & Matt: I guess I'm confused. I have a que about this on RB forum. Are you saying that the pgm selects DXI to render, but actually renders via your ext. synths.? I have a Ketron SD2, but have never tried to use real tracks with it.

You have a point, in that for the special case where there are no MIDI tracks, then you shouldn't need to have VST/DXi available.

It will Render any MIDI tracks using the DXi synth. But I just let it go ahead and do that in order to quickly render any multiple realtracks sometimes.
Moat times, I export the realtracks one at a time and then go ahead and export MIDI tracks over to RealBand. In there, I record the SD2 tracks to audio track, along with any realtracks.
The current "Render" method of BIAB is confusing. People don't understand that it only works right when using a DXi MIDI synth. That will quickly "render" both MIDI and Audio tracks to a stereo wav file. But if you are using a Hardware MIDI Synth like the SD2, you are going to have to RECORD its output from beginning to end of song in order to hear what the SD2 is doing in the finished audio file. There is not quick way to "render" when using an external synth.

This thinking is something which has been imported into RealBand unfortunately. When I am Mixing down a number of Audio Tracks, I am faced with a Message Panel telling me that I have no DXi/VSTi selected which message I have to cancel each time because all my Midi Tracks have been previously recorded individually and I am concerned only with merging Wave Tracks. This seems to apply to the user who wishes to do a glorious mix of assorted Midi and Wave tracks at a single pass. I don't and would prefer that this message box includes a check box "Not to Appear in Future". Likewise, when the mix is completed, I am asked whether or not I wish to hear the Wave via say the Windows Audio Player. Again I do not. I want to load the wave back into RealBand for further development which I can do just as quickly as opening a Media Player and is far more useful.

Another possible bonus is that if rendering is not needed not having to look for these tracks may speed up the code. I would think that this processing time could be avoided and rendering just audio would be a relatively speedy event?
