Hi All,

New to the forums so I hope this has not been asked before - couldn't find it in a search.
I am using BIAB 2009 with latest updates. When I play a song using real tracks 7 Ray and
Paul Basses I sometimes get a loud noise like a string breaking or loud crack. It occurs often
enough to be a nuisance.
Any suggestions please?

Hi Ken

Just to be sure, do you have BIAB 2009 or BIAB 2009.5 as this free update (and the latest update patch) cured some of these issues

It would pay to re-download and re-install BIAB 2009.5 over the existing version

Also ensure that when this is done you do a disk clean and defrag as this large program and audio files scatter themselves all over the place

There are indeed some string noises recorded on those two realtracks, typical of string bass tracks. However, they are not glaring or digital clipping or too loud or anything like that.

Locate the source .wma files in your RealTracks folder and play them back using Windows Media Player or another player like that, listen to them. They should sound okay. The clacks of the strings slapping the fretboard are part of them, though.

As once stated eloquently, I think by Bruce Richardson, "A good bass track sounds like someone is working on a Buick in the background when solo'd." So true. But that stuff tends to hide in the context of a mix.

Hi Jazzman,

Thank you for your quick response. I am updated to 2009.5 plus realtracks updates.
It was a good point that you made about a disc-clean and defrag - that's something
which I am a bit tardy about and have now done both at your prompting. Will try
to do it regularly in future. If it hasn't cured what I was enquiring about at least it's
good for my PC.
I think mac has hit the nail on the head re my query - I am replying separately to him.

Thanks again,

Ken

Hi Mac,

Thank you for your quick response to my query. I did what you suggested and listened to the bass tracks on Real Player and the noises which I was referring to are present there as well. They seem
to be much more to the fore on the "Paul" tracks as opposed to the "Ray" ones. As a pianist, of sorts,
I use BIAB at home along with a piano-sound from my keyboard/SD2 to give me a bass and drums
backing and obviously these "other" sounds are more noticeable without any frontline instruments to
cover them. Obviously something just to accept and live with. Just for interest I auditioned the
bass tracks on some of the PG Jazz Multitracks and the "slaps" when they occur are much less evident.

What I have been using along with my piano sound is 397 Bass Paul Sw140 along with real drums for
the slower tunes and 400 Ray Sw 160 along with real drums for the faster tunes. In your opinion is
this the best set-up for a jazz trio please?

Re the Buick, as I am resident in England I don't recall seing one of those fine cars for about sixty
years. When I was a schoolkid a builder who lived across the road from us had a lovely Packard
saloon, but the Income Tax People (IRS) caught up with him and he had to sell it along with everything else. My parents went to a fire-sale of his possessions and made a successful bid for
his piano and the rest is history as they say.

Many thanks,

Ken

I'd say it depends on the song and the musician, Ken.

For my tastes, I like to "mix and match" so that there isn't just one Bass "player" or "drummer" going on throughout an entire session. Makes things more interesting IMO.

Have Fun,
