As a way of controlling the melody or soloist, it would be useful to be able to make a change at a certain bar, to insert a patch which produces no sound. However, I have not been able to find a patch which does this. Does it exist?

Thanks for replying.
When I press F5, I get the window for editing the settings for the current bar. In that window, is there a way to select a silence patch?

I think John was suggesting you look at this problem another way. Instead of selecting a "silent patch", just mute that instrument at that bar after pressing F5.
In the Instrument Changes box, look in the LEFT column under Volume (not the right column under patch changes). Click on the dropdown for an instrument and select Mute.
Later on, do F5 again and select Back to Normal.

Thanks.
I don't see a volume column in the "edit the settings for the current bar" window. I see a patch changes in the left column for bass, piano, drums, and guitar; and another patch changes on the right for strings, melody, soloist, and thru.
I am using biab 2007. I wonder if the feature you are referring to was added in 2008 or 2009?

OH - yes, it was added in, I think, 2008 or 2008.5 maybe.
In case you don't want to update your version, did 2007 support Hybrid Styles? That's a more complicated solution, but another way to go. [EDIT. No. See next post.]
What do you use for MIDI output? If it is a hardware synth, maybe there is a patch for No Sound. I doubt it, though; my Roland doesn't have one. Or maybe there is a way to do this through MIDI controller messages.
Upgrading is easier...

Hybrid styles won't work, because they affect comping instruments only and don't touch melody or solo track. It's easy, though, to insert a few muting control parameters at appropriate positions via the PianoRoll Window, such as CC #11 for expression, or setting velocities to zero etc.
Upgrading would be even easier, of course.

Why not use the Chord Setings window, "Rest all Instruments but..." command?
Just have to do that at every bar where you don't want them heard is all.

IF the version of BIAB contains the PianoRoll view, one could draw in Volume Envelopes Controller 7, using the Mouse...
