Some of you will, no doubt, remember the ubiquitous Auratones which sat above the meter-bridge in almost every studio in the 70s - rharv has probably still got some, like me.

After the mix was completed on the main monitors, it would be played back through the little Auratones to see how it would sound on the radio, in the car, etc. I don't ever remember checking a mix on headphones in those days, simply because not many folks listened to music that way. These days, a headphone check is pretty much an essential part of the mixing process.

So where I am going with this? Well, we've just invested in a soundbar and sub, because so much music is now streamed from people's mobile phones via bluetooth to the soundbar connected to the TV, that it's good to check this as well. To my ears, soundbars sound immediately flattering due to the bright top end and thumping bass, but after a while they become tiring. Whilst I wouldn't want to mix exclusively for soundbars, I do find myself going back to tweak the mix after hearing it on that system.

Basically, I was wondering if anyone else has gone down this route and what your thoughts are. With so many playback devices these days, can we hope to get a mix which works for every eventuality?

Just thinking...
