I'm working with B-in-B 2009.5 for Windows (XP) and I ran into a problem.

I want to have beat 4.5 of measure 1 play an F. Then I want beat 1 of measure 2 to play a C.

If I push the F chord from the beginning of measure 2, then it starts to play the F at the right time, but it continues with the F through the end of the first beat of measure 2.

I only want the F to play for 1/2 of a beat (an eighth note)

Any ideas on how to get this done?
Thanks,
Stony

Hey Stony,

BIAB only supports 1 chord per beat. I'm sure you know about using a comma in order to have up to 4 chords per measure. You could also try to play around with the "Expand" or "Reduce" chord durations in the Edit menu or change some things in the bar by right clicking on the bar in question and then choosing "Bar Settings". This might be something for the wish list.

Hope that helps,
Ed

In BIAB, you can't play a chord on beat 4 1/2, then again on beat 1 of the next bar, because you have to use beat 1 of the next bar to achieve the push back to beat 4 1/2. It's been a long time wish list item to get 8th note (or even 16th note) chord resolution. Maybe one day we'll see it.

One work around is to either mute beat 4 or use a shot on beat 4, then use either the melody or soloist track to play the chord on beat 4 1/2. Using the sequencing feature, you could even have multiple channels to do that. That it does take a little work and planning to accomplish that. Of course, if you are printing out parts for people to play from, you would have to ink that chord in manually.

Another workaround is to use Extended Styles. They make two bars equal to one bar in time, thus allowing up to 8 chords per bar. Notation printout is nasty, but it works and it sounds identical to true 8 chords per bar.

You can make your own Extended Style, you can also maybe find another style that would work at the tempo you need, or you can take a look at Bob "Notes" Norton's extended styles to see if there is one or two that might fit your specified need.

Another workaround that sometimes works - create a bar with just one beat and double the tempo (remember to set the tempo and number of beats back at the next bar). Had to do this recently in a song and it worked out wonderful. But like I said - sometimes.

I'm guessing that extended styles approach won't work too well with realtracks because the adjusted tempo would be outside the comfort zone of the realtracks?

It really would be great to get proper 8th or 16th note resolution in the product.

Regards, Aubrey

Thanks to each of you for your possible work-arounds. I thought about doubling the timing, but I wasn't sure how it would affect the feel of the song. I'll have to take some time one day and play with it.
In my own application, I'm sending each BB instrument line (MIDI) one at a time to a sequencer. My plan is to just go into the sequencer and transpose where necessary. After identifying measure and beat numbers, it should take me an extra five minutes, at most to do this. I was just hoping there was some neat/clean way to accomplish the same thing using BB.
When I called PG Music's tech support line, they said they were there for resolution of hardware/software issues not "how-to" help. (Although, they did spend some time trying to figure this one out.) They then directed me to the forum area of their website. Before, I hung up I made a point of asking the tech guy to pass this problem up the food chain so that it would be dealt with in some later version of BB. I see from some of the replies that this is something others would like to see made available as well.
Thanks again,
Stony

Where can I read more about "Extended Styles"? I don't need it at the moment, but I probably will at some time. Does BIAB have a sample extended style?

This is why I invented EXPANDED styles (some call them extended).

In my EXPANDED styles, each "cell" of BiaB becomes a half measure. Doubling the tempo makes it sound right. You can get up to 8 chords per bar, one on each half beat with my EXPANDED styles.

To audition, go to http://www.nortonmusic.com/styledemo.html and look for the styles that say (EXPANDED *) near or under the style name.

They come in many styles, jazz/rock/country/fusion/Latin/CCM, etc.

And they are a necessity when you want a "push" before a beat and another chord on the same beat. There simply isn't any other way to do it with BiaB.

Sorry for the confusion, I typed extended and should have been thinking, "Expanded".

Looked right at the time...
