Hello, a Band-in-a-Box 2009.5 for Mac user asked in spanish forum about of how to export BIAB songs as MIDI files without volume and panning data content in order to programing it later in Garage Band or whichever. In my reply I pointed him to uncheck 'Include Volume/Reverb/Chorus/Panning' from ' FILE/Make a Standard MIDI File/Options ' as is done in BIAB 2009.5 for Windows. My surprise, he said in BIAB 2009.5 Mac version don´t appear 'Make a Standard MIDI File' and Midi file Options from FILE menu, he told only there is a "save MIDI file" option. I have my doubts now, but If that is true where is MIDI options in Mac version? also how can MIDI controller/data information be filtered ?

thanks in advance on any help.

Carlos

Before you save your midi file using file menu: "Save Standard Midi File", go to the preferences (command comma) and uncheck or check any of the filter options you want there. For example, I might uncheck "Include Patch Changes in Midi Files" if I wanted that filtered out.

After I do that, I would go back and choose save standard midi file.

Hope that helps!

I just tried saving a MIDI file for the first time with the new (RealTracks/RealDrums) version. I get a MIDI file, but it contains only the drum track. I've checked the file both in Logic and in Quicktime, and in both cases, only drums. Am I missing something??

Footnote: I just found the 2009.5 update
  • and installed it. Same problem. I can't see any Preferences that would control this. Are other users getting all the tracks in their MIDI files? Am I doing something dim?

Are the Drums that only track that is MIDI based in that particular song?

I don't think I understand. The song contains one RealDrums track and three or four RealTracks tracks. Only the (RealDrums) drum track shows up in the MIDI file.

Maybe the problem is that I don't understand the relation between MIDI and Real(Drums|Tracks). I'm assuming that BiaB has an available internal MIDI representation of each track, whether BiaB realizes it, when I hit Play, as straight MIDI commands to Quicktime Instruments (or whatever the output system is), or as triggers to RealTracks samples. What I expected to get when I saved the file was the MIDI representation of all those triggers in all tracks.

If I'm wrong about that model, then two questions. First, why does the drum track show up at all in the resulting MIDI file? Second, how do I achieve a MIDI file that is the same as my BiaB song (except for the particular sampled sounds)? If the song uses one of the Styles that's built on RealTracks and RealDrums, do I have to go through selecting non-RealTracks and non-RealDrums output for every active voice in the song, and then save that as a MIDI file? That would be awfully tedious.

If a track contains a Realtrack (e.g. a Realtrack Guitar (strumming) is attached to the Piano track), no information for the Piano channel will be written to a midi file if the song is save as midi. This is because the Piano track contains no midi data in the first place.

To get BIAB to write all tracks to a midi file, the individual tracks (Piano, Bass, Guitar, etc.) would need to contain midi information. I suggest experimenting with some of the styles that are 100% midi and contain no Realtracks. There are 1,000s of excellent midi-based-only styles in BIAB.

    Regards,
    Noel

I see how it works, then. (At least down to a certain level of detail.)

Unfortunately there are not thousands of excellent MIDI-based jazz styles, though there are dozens. But some of the new styles with RealTracks are also better, just as styles, than some comparable older ones that I've used for years. That's why I was wanting to do what I now see isn't (directly) possible.

    Thanks for the information.
