I agree that things should be done skillfully, nor does that contradict what I've said. Each of us has limitations, and this group is apparently limited by the drummer. However, it is still the heart of service.
The drummer needs to be brought along to a higher level of skill, and unless they are able to replace him, moving forward to jumps in choruses, etc., is very confusing. Therefore, he needs to work within the limitations of the drummer, until that drummer can better develop his skills.

I'm blessed watching God do what He does best. I've had a few rough years, and I'm still not back to where I want to be, but I'm on the way and things are looking far better now than what they were!

Well, there is one other option...
But I've always run my choirs and worship service by starting off with auditions.
There's nothing wrong about having an "A" group and a "B" group, either.
These things can be hard to do if you already have a lineup, though, emotions run, feelings get hurt, the whole nine yards.
As for "skillful" -- I think far too many people are defining that as meaning "schooled" or the like.
I kow plenty of skillful entertainers and musicians who don't read music, never took formal studies, yet are exceptionally skillful at what they do.
Heck, Andrae Crouch learned to play and sing the way he does simply because his Daddy, a preacher, laid hands on him when he was nine years old and asked the Lord to give him the gift of music.
Andrae got the gift.
He's played like that since a child.
I can tell you it hasn't been that way for me (grin).
But seriously, a drummer who cannot keep time is not a drummer.
By definition.
Just because I'm a Christian does not mean that I have to put up with crap.
Yeah, I'd fire the guy unless some improvement was shown, and soon.
Better no drums than bad drums.
Give him a knife and ask him if he knows what's inside his snare...

jah. to be honest i would never buy a celeron laptop. the celeron is the weakest processor in the lineup of processors. run this before buying any pc laptop. http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtmlits a very usefull utility.

I just posted something similar. I am looking to come up with a solution for churches that just don't have musicians. something like a midi player that can be forced to repeat certain parts of the song. not at the last minute but rather with a little notice. it sounds like the conductor feature can do this. so many churches here in the bible belt are without any good music. this part of churching causes a lot of strife. can there not be a simle solution for a church that has had enough of people not showing up to play or just not being able to cut it. I am thinking a simple computer and midi module setup and a program to manage that so they can have music at an affordable level and still have control of verse, chorus, bridge, volume, etc. having a bank of songs to choose from and offer more downloads as time goes on. htis is a business idea that I am trying to develope that would be a great aid to small churches and start up ministries.

A non-denominational DJ package - tutor the local church representative - ought to be kids in each congregation with the tech know-how to jump at this.

There is a deeper problem with the issue if people are not showing up to play, etc.
I'll reiterate the wrong and right definition of corporate worship that I learned probably 10 years ago:
Wrong:
God is the prompter
Musicians/worship team are the performers
Congregation is the audience
Right:
Musicians/worship team are the prompters
Congregation is the performer
God is the audience
If you can't get some folks to show up and take responsibility, it's time to go acapella. I'm serious about that. I attended a church several times when I was in college when the only non-vocal instrument in the whole place was a pitch-pipe.
That church knew how to sing. Shape-note hymnals and everything.
If that won't work, then it's time to hire out for at least a guitar player/worship leader or piano player. Even consider hiring some non-believers. There's a church back near my home in Michigan that had very 'skillfully' nailed, and they used some hired in musicians as a witnessing opportunity. They were treated with grace and you know what, those opportunities bore fruit more often than not.

Organdoc, if you read my post above where I described a couple of scenarios where it can all go bad, this can still work for you if you're the one in control, not a front singer. If this is a small thing with just you or maybe one or two others, there should be no problem. Biab with the Conductor will work perfectly for you.
Here's how you could do it: Lay out the song as one chorus no repeats or anything. If you anticipate doing lots of different repeats and jumping around the tune then you don't need to set it up as a normal song with 1st and 2nd endings, codas, etc. Lets say the first 8 bars are either the intro or a vamp. The second 12 bars is a verse, the next 12 a bridge and the last 8 a tag or ending. You have 4 sections. Set up the Conductor where the number keys on your laptop correspond to those 4 sections. You put a part marker on the first bar of each section and set up the conductor to repeat the current section if you hit the proper key while it's still playing that section when the tune comes to the next part marker. It will loop the current section as many times as you want if you keep hitting the key before it goes past the part marker. You can let it play the intro on into the verse but have it repeat the bridge 3 times by hitting the 3 key each time the bridge is playing. If you don't hit it, it will go on to the end. You can also set up a number key to jump directly to the end when it hits the next part marker if you want to cut it short. This is just an example, you can also have it jump instantly or at the next bar but that usually sounds awkward. It can jump back to the beginning or jump to different sections as well. There's lots of flexibility there as long as you're controlling it.

Scott, you make some very good points. One on my frustrations about some Hymns is that the congregation don't fully understand that the words of that Hymn are as meaningful as the message from the pulpit.
We are guest in God's house.
Just my thoughts on this issue, it's not about us,it's about Him.

Don't use canned tracks unless absolutely necessary. Allow the other musicians to be "used" and grow as a team. You will have much more satisfaction then making professional backing tracks. Follow the "Spirit." If you need more practice etc. . . then ya gotta put the time in. God will honor that as well  Run what ya brung and God will use it for his Glory !!!! Trax
