As simple but broad in concept the statement is it just may be the quintessential definition.

And yes you triggered my memory when you said holding up a number of fingers based upon how many flats in the key. I will never forget one time as a kid I was sitting in with my older much more musically seasoned than I cousin Murphy Campo calling out, I think it was Tea For Two and holding up five fingers. I'll bet my chord selections were correct at least 20% of the time. After the tune with a big grin on his face he told me that sometimes I should try playing in between those bars. Then he said it will come, it will come little cousin.
