This may be of interest. Lex is one of the third party developers of drivers for KX.

..except it is another specialized WDM driver in reality. A WDM acting as ASIO much like ASIO4All

And meant only for older AC97 codec machines.

Its very cool that he is offering it for free publicly, but it is not a real ASIO driver from his own description.
Please read his 'why try it' and 'why not to try it' section before trying to install.

Regarding 'Real' ASIO, I really haven't had issue with ASIO drivers with programs that are designed to take advantage of them. I used the KX ASIO with my Live cards back in the day, and my PreSonus ASIO drivers have given me nary an issue.

Hello,
Sorry for barging in like this, but I see there is some misunderstanding regarding the
AC97 ASIO driver I've released and I'm curious if this is a fault on my part by not providing enough info on my web page.
Please let me know if that is the case.

Anyway;
Since the arrival of Kernel Streamers like Asio4All we now have two types of ASIO drivers;
1. Native (like the ones that ship with pro-audio cards)
2. Generic (Kernel Streamers like Asio4All)

The AC97 ASIO driver I released is Native.
It is the same type of driver like the ones that ship with pro-audio cards.
Namely a driver consisting of a hardware specific WDM Kernel driver part and a native ASIO DLL part.

Kernel streamers like Asio4All do not provide a hardware specific WDM Kernel driver part. Just a generic ASIO DLL that "rides on top" of the already installed Vendor WDM Kernel driver.

Pros/Cons
Native ASIO drivers are written specifically for their hardware and as such can/should provide better ASIO performance but of course only work on the hardware they were written for.

The Generic ASIO Kernel Streamers work on top of almost any WDM audio driver, but as such can only be as good as the driver they "ride on".
Not seldom Kernel Streamers like Asio4All even perform better then the native ASIO
drivers shipped with certain cards.

Right from the horses mouth.

Interesting comments, thanks for clarifying, although, I stopped by the link and it seemed clear to me.

Stop back anytime It would appear you know a thing or two about this stuff which could help us all.

Oh, by the way, welcome to the forum!

Hi Lex

When your page said
"For those who are interested, here is such a WDM driver which I wrote primarily for use on my (older generation) notebooks"

I took that as meaning it was a WDM like the ASIO4All driver you described.

Thanks for clarifying.

Very interested in how well it works

And more importantly; thanks for sharing it!

Hi rharv,
Thanks for pointing that out.
Although the text is correct, if read to fast one might indeed conclude that.
I'll have to rephrase that somehow because Asio4All and alike aren't WDM drivers at all!

Lex,

Sam was right about just teasing. The people here in the PG family are good people.

We often trade good natured barbs or jokes, but I don't think there's a rude person in the bunch.

Welcome to the forum.

Have you ever met a man of bad character where music is concerned? Well, I haven't! (A reference to Professor Higgins's retort to Colonel Pickering in 'My Fair Lady': "Have you ever met a man of good character where women are concerned?" )

Lex,
Appreciate your clarifying that for me. I've been an avid user of KX and your addons for quite some time and have really been pushing them here.
You might want to check out the KX Forums as well if you are using one of the supported Creative cards. I've been using KX for over 5 years now and love it.

Lex is also looking for Beta testers for his ASIO Native driver.

I just installed it and it's great in BIAB. No glitches at all. It's stable even with all Real Tracks. I'm helping Lex Beta test this so if anyone needs guidance on the install I can help. It's easy and is really not quite like the old manual install of yester year. You don't need to uninstall the old driver first. Just do a driver update in devive manager for your ac97 card.First download the .zip and unpack the files into a clean folder that you'll be able to find at a later time.
Step by step once in device manager:
1. Right click on your ac97 card and choose "update driver"
2.check no--next
3. install from a list---next
4.don't search---next
5. choose ac'97 Audio controller---click "have disc"
6. Browse to the location were you saved the files and choose the .inf file
7. next and your done.

Disregard and driver signing messages.

I've been testing this and it works very well. Being able to have ASIO drivers on an old RealTec card with 4.0 MS of latency is pretty nice.
