Anyhow? Anyhoo! Come on - this is a forum with FRIENDS. Don't let us start falling apart about the validity of postings... BTW, validity is in the mind of the poster... And Prince Charles is an uncle of mine (kidding)

I really don't think that PG Music would have an issue with forum members enquiring as to the health of another member, or in wishing other members Merry Christmas, Happy New Year or the occasional joke or comment on a current news item. Although these things are not music related, we are all cyber friends, and I don't think that PG Music or the forum moderators would consider that too serious a breach of the forum rules. Only my view anyhow.

Danny,
I've never used the ignore button before, and I don't plan on using it for the reasons you mentioned.
If a thread is inappropiate, then let PG kill it. But I do find it slightly offensive when a member tries to be the "Forum Police". As stated earlier in this thread, this forum belongs to PG Music.
So if a member comes along and tries to "put someone straight" on the rules, I think they are totally out of line.
It's different if a spammer comes along and tries to put something up. It's another thing entirely if a standing member brings up something that is outside of the "rules".
I look at them the same way I would look at someone in elementary school who was a "tattletale". Get a life. If somebody is doing something wrong, then it's up to the teacher to catch them. Not a "snitch" who is trying to set them straight.
Bob
Bob,
For what it is worth I understood your point from the git go and for the most part agree with you, but shouldn't the "tattletale” have the same right (rhetorical) after all he/she is just speaking their mind regarding the rules as they see them. And at our age should we really require a "teacher" to catch us breaking a forum rule, or should we as adults understand PG Music’s rules and show enough respect for the forum host and our fellow members just do the right thing and abide by it, again rhetorical.
Bottom-line I could care less if PG Music decided to expand their list of off topic subjects that can be discussed on the forum. However my gut tells me it would be a mistake as they may inadvertently began to be known for something other than their wonderful products. But as said quite a few times in this thread it is 100% their call.
See already I have thought too much on this subject taking my time and energy away from all of those "old click in intros" Russ has been breaking my chops to correct. Just kidding Russ.
PS: Russ I finally downloaded Audacity, it works great to silence those old click in intros - Thanks Again!
I'm outta here - Until Later,

If you really get your feelings hurt by posts on a computer forum I feel sorry for you.
This statement made me laugh! (emotion) Bravo on the funny!
The hyperbole is insufficient to mask how illogical it is.
So you feel sorry (emotion) for an often nameless, usually faceless, internet personage if they EVER get their feelings hurt (emotion) by an internet post.
Classic!
I laugh, empathize, and get angry on a fairly routine basis at viewpoints expressed here. I've gotten my feelings hurt too.
No need whatsoever to feel sorry for me. I'll own it. It's part of what makes me tick.
Emotionless musician / songwriter is not what I'm shooting for.

On the topic of "off-topic": My immediate reaction was "what's the problem"? As Mac pointed it out, it's PG Music's forum. The way this forum has been run, the people here, and the (relative) freedom of expression are what attracted me here. I have viewed (maybe incorrectly) PG Music's forum statements of the last year as a reaction to external pressures. Practically, I haven't seen that much difference in how non-music posts / topics have been handled. Those who have zero interest in PG Music products or even in music, and come here to "blow their horn" are usually gone, and often their posts go with them. When threads get ultra-contentious or even mean, no matter who's participating, they get closed or vanish. The moderation has never seemed "over-the-top" or heavy-handed to me. Sometimes, when reading a volatile thread (I usually read but almost never participate in such threads), I feel for the PG Music staff, wondering whether the "internet police" demands on their time will lead to harsher moderation or even forum elimination.. Suppose PG Music creates a "wild west" compartment. If they don't moderate at all, then they may have some liability for what happens there. If they do moderate, and it's really a "wild west" environment, it's nothing but a drain on their company resources, with little our no value returned to their (fine) company. I wouldn't visit. What makes this forum compelling for me is the two things I have in common with everyone here. I love music and I use (love) PG Music products. From PG Music's point of view, many, if not most, of PG Music's loyalists visit here. When PG Music newbies visit here, I would think the skill and general music knowledge would impress them. (At least, I've been impressed.) In that environment, once they see the rabid loyalty to the PG Music products, they're probably well on their way to being customers. Though nearly everyone here is a nameless, faceless internet personage to me, in my minds eye, I see very real people (friends). Maybe it's mostly tastes in music, views on music, or on PG Music's software as characterization, but the people are fleshed out to me by their off-topic posts. That's the chief value of "off-topic" to me. I learn stuff, and that's a huge ancillary plus. I could go elsewhere to learn stuff. But I could never replace those off-topic aspects of these musicians who I have come to admire and/or respect. I really agree with Lawrie's thought here: Quote:
...There are lots of people here for HT to feel sorry for; they are the ones whose opinions, in general, I value most, the ones who make this forum a worthwhile place to come.

Hey guys, I recieved a PM from Scott this morning, (rockstar_not), and he asked me a question. I tried to reply, but he has put me on his "ignore" list. So if one of you would tell Scott that if he would like an answer to his question, then he needs to lift the ignore setting. If he doesn't want an answer to his question, I'm not sure why he PM'd me this morning and asked me the question in the first place. Oh well. Doesn't matter to me one way or the other. I'm just suprised that someone would ask a question that they really don't want an answer to. Was it a rhetorical question? Thanks, Bob

Since the question that Scott asked me could be considered a bit "contentious", I don't think it was rhetorical.

Didn't realize the ignore applied to PM as well as forum posts. Un-ignored now and ready for the PM. I don't use the ignore function all that much. I'd been reading the forum un-logged in.

...which is why I haven't voted. Not our question to answer. However we do have a responsiblity and a commitment to obey the Forum rules as they stand. Which is why I posted the original comment (on Sam's thread) which sparked off this debate. PG music makes and sells software. It has kindly made this forum available to us (shrewdly too, as it knows the very fact of participating on these boards strengthens the vital seller-customer bond). However it quite obviously retains all the rights to decide on what can and cannot be discussed.

it was never my intention to usurp or even to question the authority of pg music. if enough people agreed to the need i was prepared to SUGGEST it to peter. this thread is a prime example of just how far afield a point can wander when let off the leash. i, for one, am sorry i ever brought it up. colo(u)r me deeply saddened.
