Do you have (Options, preferences, "Pause Play until Midi or Key Received") checked? I have it checked so it will not automatically play. To get it to play immediately I just have to uncheck it. I am using 2016. 2012 had this feature to. I would think it is still there.
Thanks,bowlesj, it is unchecked, not working in 2018(513)here. WinXP SP3.
