Tascam , M-Audio, Roland and several others have multitrack recorders that will record 2 tracks at the same time and allow 4 to 8 total tracks.They can use a SD or CF 1gig card also Has anyone tried any of these? I was wondering about the sound quality. The Tascam 02 model is priced a $199 at guitar center others are up to $350-$400. If the A?D converters are clean it might be something useful for a singer and either guitar or keyboard or a church service for a sermon instead of burning a cd of the mixdown from the mixer, which is why I'm interested. Any thoughts, Wyndham

Hmmmppph, I'm going to need to redo my post. After looking at those devices, I thought they were all compressed audio, but those are recording at 16 or 24 bit, 44.1kHz! So, on a one gig card, at 16/44.1, you should get 90 minutes of two track recording. That isn't too bad. And, moving up to the $400-$600 range offers some nice options. Some of the Roland recorders (and others) do not compress, and actually can do 24bit wav.
It is a good thing to watch for in the specs, for sure; what format does it record at?
It'll be a little more $ for the good stuff!
Another thing to watch for is the media used ny the device.
Even if an SD card, if it only handles a 1 gig card, they may be hard to find.
I'd ask a few questions before deciding; lotsa pitfalls, but also some great units out there.
For some, the mp3 hi-res format may even be fine

The reason I was looking at the SD card option as opposed to the hard disk is the ease of transferring the 2 track to the sequencer whether Sonar or other. I have an old fostex that has a hard disk but is too cumbersome to lug around from church to home. That Samson looks very interesting.
I guess one of my main concerns is the quality of the audio wav files from these units.

Take a hard look at the Tascam DP004. It uses an SD card, has dual track recording, and has 2 excellent condenser mics built in. About the size of a paperback book. It will record four tracks in 16/44, and the bouncing feature gives you many others.
It's one of many similar devices on the market, and most are pretty cool for the features and money. I like the DP-004 because it's similar to my DP-01 in operation so I don't have a learning curve, and it's very portable. The built-in mics are amazing in quality, especially for the price - $200.00.
If you look around on the net, you will find a bunch of devices that will probably fit your needs at some very reasonable prices.

That's one that started this whole trek for a new recorder. I don't have the specs in front of me right now but does it have 1/4 in input or XLR and does it have phantom power if I have an external condenser mic. The pulpit mic is condenser and if I can split the signal before it comes into the 16 channel Peavy powered mixer then i can route one leg to the peavy and the other to the Tascam to record the sermon.
I don't have direct outs on the mixer and that's part of my problem.

Check out the new features to make band in a box plug into the sequencer, or drag and drop everything to one. I don't use that option, but from what I see here all the time lots of guys and gals are going to like that, and a lot!
Band in a Box 2010 is the best music tool available for music practice, and for getting a quick band going doing backing tracks on gigs.

No AUX out on the Peavey that could route one or two channels to something else??
Not even an effects send?
Seems like there would be some way to the signal out, even if just using a smaller mixer with that feature before the big PA ..
Many of the smaller recorders are 1/4", not XLR, so don't have phantom power .. another good thing to watch for!

Mac this is the xr 1600f 20 channel 3x 200 watt powered mixer. if there's a way to pull separate channels, that would be great. All I have seen so far seem to sum the different channels to the 3 power amps. I hope I'm wrong on this. Thanks for any help, Wyndham Edit: just put my order in for 2010 upgrade, Santa has spoken.

Are you sure of that model numbe?
SE and 1600 together is a biamp power amp...
At any rate, all the XR series mixers I've seen have RCA Tape Outputs on them, take a look for those.

Mac, It does have a tape out and that can go to any recording device. Currently it goes to a Tascam tape/cd recorder but it goes as a mix of all active channels.
On my Soundcraft board at home i have direct out from each input channel but the XR1600f does not have this feature .
My problem has been that the vocal channel for either sermon(condenser) or singing(dynamic shure57) is mixed with keyboard channel(when in use). This keeps me from adjusting individual tracks later to give a better mix.
So I thought to get one of the inexpensive mutitrack recorders like the Tascam and split the signal before the XR1600f so I can record the vocal track and the keyboard track on separate wav files for later editing and mixdown of my wifes singing for special music times in the service.
If these units can record good 16 bit/44k wav files, that's the heart of the matter.
If I have missed something on the XR1600f that would allow this, I've just missed it. If there is a better way to use the channels or split them before the Peavy mixer or after, I would welcome any advice.
I started learning about mixers a few years ago when someone said out of the blue, Wyndham you handle the sound system for the church. At tha time I had never even seen a mixer or an amp or faders. So even thought i have gone a lone way in learning many parts of recording and mixers I'm still very green on the use of many of the tools that those here on the board have used all there musical life.
So what I see as a solution may not be the better way to do this.

It appears the "effects mixer output" can be used in conjunction with the effects send for each channel to get another line level output .. You will need a 1/4" TRS to L & R splitting cable (typical 1/4" stereo to 2 separate RCA should work fine) You will have to defeat the built in FX unit to use this feature .. decribed in the manual.
