But it shows the paradox and answers in truth.
Suffice to say; 12 notes..infinite possibilites. Which would be more astounding.

6 and 24 are numerical, which has no place in music but to measure time. Which these numbers dont represent. They tell of the notes on a guitar fretboard, and the way they are played is... unmeasureable.
To me anyway!

Numbers are all over music.

Harmony, keysigs, the scales, the modes, all are mathematical in nature.

And they are indeed finite, too.

But there's plenty to work with, no fear of running out any time soon, for there is a LOT that the human ear is not *ready* to hear as music -- and may never develop the taste for either.

Well I guess, when youre learning music ie: circle of fifths, scale degrees, etc. counting is necessary. But primarily, numbers are used to measure time which can be replaced with a click or tap of the foot while counting bar measures. Thats what Im saying.

As far as my signature goes... Im sticking to it! No 2 guitar players are exactly alike so, their notes contribute to my statement. lol

Most pro players think the harmonic numbers instead of Chord Names.

This is the secret to being able to instantly Transpose to any of the 12 keys, for one thing.

There are many other advantages to doing it that way, also.

When I frist started out, and even for quite some time after that, I too thought that there were "infinite" possibilities in music, especially in the songwriting aspect of things.

I soon found out -- and finally got it through my thick skull -- that while I *could* do things that weren't popular or done before, that it is best to intorduce those kind of things very sparingly because people listening to the thing are not ready for a lot of "different" things happening at once. Such is the way of western music and it has been that way from the beginning. Example, today we all know and love the use of the Tritone within the Blues idiom, which forms the basis of the Jazz and Rock idioms also. But there was once a time when that was just not done and the people could not hear it.

This is a fascinating subject to explore, BTW. Along the way I learned just how much of what we can get away with doing is a matter of perception as vs possibility.

Well, I guess you could look at this this way... How many points are there on the line represented by the guitar string? Sounds infinite to me, unless there was something that ensured you could only place your finger on the fret in the "exact" same place every time (which doesn't happen). You wouldn't necessarily hear the difference, but there would be a difference.

So there are infinite possibilities, but we would just never know or hear the difference.

Playing the 'wood' vs playing right on the fret does have a different sound, but that only means that there's two different tonalities.

Even doing that doesn't make the possibilities "infinite".

There is another factor in the equation not discussed so far, and that is the reach of the human hand and how far one can actually stretch fingers and still fret strings, not to mention *which* string combinations. All of this would narrow the field some more, of course.

And we haven't even addressed how many possible combinations simply wouldn't be "musical" in the harmonic sense of the term, either. Usable sometimes, perhaps, but not of mainstream consideration. Even if you include the enharmonic possibilities, the count would still be something not infinite.

Infinity itself is bandied about and highly overrated.

Recent discoveries have even proven that our Universe is not infinite.

So much for the concept "settled science" eh?

Perhaps the most damnable of oxymorons.

Using it at work may not be a good idea depending on who you work for, I guess. While you don't have to actually install Biab on the system drive, you do have to install a few small things like fonts, the VSC and a few others. An office system may not allow this plus for you to hear anything, you either have to use your desktop speakers or headphones. Either way, everybody around you will know what you're doing.
As a brand new user, in addition to the recommendation to play around with the demo songs, I would start right away creating a new simple tune from scratch like a 12 bar I-IV-V blues just to see how the chord entry works. Also, pay attention to how the chord grid opens up with it's defaults. The first line of icons right above the chord grid you see reading from the left, the style name, the key signature, the tempo then you see three white boxes with numbers in them. The default is 1-32-3. That stands for the chorus starts on bar 1, it goes for 32 bars and it has 3 repeats. For a 12 bar blues, click and change the second box to 12. That's it for now, setting up those 3 boxes gets new users every time. Oh, almost forgot, get used to setting the proper key signature. It defaults to C and while you can create and play a song using any chords you want without changing the key sig, as soon as you want to see the notation, you'll be asking why it's wrong like, your song is in E but the notation has all these flats in it. That's because you didn't set the key sig. If you're schooled in music theory, you'll soon find that Biab follows it pretty well and if you don't know much theory, by working with this program you'll start learning it.

Thanks for the tip Jazzmammal, I cant wait for Christmas. I cant open BIAB until then, I promised my family. That whole Ho Ho Ho Santa thing.

As far as using it at work..it was a joke guys! I could get away with it, I do have lunch breaks and Im often there when Im not supposed to be either early or covering for others. But I have a feeling playing for an hour or so, just wont do it for moi. lol

Mac, when I hear every guitar rythm and every guitar solo being played EXACTLY the same by 2 different guitarists... then its all been done before and I'll change my sig.

Making music IS my work.

And I own the company, so playin' with BIAB can happen here anytime. One of the reasons I post so much is that I tend to use this forum while files are uploading and downloading, compiling, whatever. Or just plain goofin' off...

In my world, that happens more often than you realize. Studio session cats and fastguns do it every day. Sometimes we fill in for each other, too, pick up where the other guy or gal left off. In order to be a chameleon like that you gotta practice.

Keep practicing.

But always make it FUN to do so.
