My daughter will be ordering the Everything Option Software on HD very shortly.
Question 1. Can I use this USB package on both my computers as a stand alone system? I have a 2.2 Gigshertz Desktop and a very old IBM laptop. I would still be using the system one at a time, so hopefully not going against any copy write /multiple copies on one computer issues. Question 2. Can I load my Power Tracks 12 on the same HD that is shipped with BB and will Windows XP recognize it and let me boot it up? Also, I have a lot of extras that I have accumilated over the years that have shipped with the different BB packages, can I load them also and expect the same results? I'm talking about the Guitar Star programs, and some other instructional guitar programs. I teach my grandsons guitar, and it would be nice just tote the hd over to their house, hook it up to their computer, and use it to teach from there.
Saying all that, I guess Question 3 would be, how long will it be until this 160 gigabyte hd will be full with new BB software? Should I be thinking teribyes? Excuse the spelling..

Yes, you can do that. The license is for one copy on one machine. Doesn't matter if you have two or twenty machines as long as that drive is only attached to one of them and you are only running the program from one machine at a time.

i think you could. I don't really know because BIAB2010 ships with a copy of RealBand, which is based on the Powertracks engine anyway and does everything that Powertracks already does and then some. They are very compatible, same look and feel. I just use RealBand instead of Powertracks now. You should try that.

Yes, you should still be able to run any extras.

If they are certain extras for BIAB, though, you may have to install them to the BB folder. This can be done on the outrigger drive.

Well, that depends upon how many songs you save in there, the size of them varies, for instance, any song where you also added an Audio track will be MUCH larger than the others in filesize.

The good news is the new FREEZE function that stores songfiles, even with the RealTracks, in a very small filesize. That surprised me pleasantly.

I wouldn't worry about things like the disk space issue until it became an issue. You will then have an idea of how long it would take you to get to a full disk. Actually, we should start being concerned when any hard drive reaches about the 15% remaining free space point or so. Anything less than that could be "dangerous" to the health of your data. But at that point you could simply go out and pick up a 320gb USB drive and copy everything over. And the good news is that by then those drives will be even lower priced than they are today, which is pretty low considering.

Thanks Mac. And I do use Real Band but I still like to manually edit my music with PTs.

Wouldn't everyone need to be careful about writing to the PG biab usb hd adding extra programs, and even updating biab if its the only 2010 that someone has, just in case something goes wrong and the biab or part of the bb folder gets wiped?

if updating biab on the usb drive would it not be essential to make a backup first?

You should always make a backup first. Just saying!

For the cost of extra external USB drives, you could save a lot of aggravation, time, and potential additional expense when something goes horribly wrong with your computer and/or its peripherals.

I've got an external USB with every piece of software I own on it. For those that let me, I just copy the files from the original to a folder on the USB. For others, I create an ISO image of the CD or DVD, which I can then mount as a virtual CD/DVD and install the software. It also makes re-installation a lot faster, in that you don't have to change CD's during installation; you just have to change to a new folder.

Obviously, I have to keep a physical copy of my operating system and a few key applications, but even then, I have those ISO'd so that I can easily re-create them if something happens to the original media.

Oh, and then I've got another external USB that I keep synchronized with the first. Call me anal, but in the final anal-ysis, I'd rather be safe than sorry. And once copied to the USB drive, it's there and I don't have to worry about it anymore.

Also, anytime there is an update to a program, I download the update to the external USB under the same folder structure as the application. I also keep all my usernames and license codes as part of the folder names, so entering license codes is just a matter of copying and pasting - no more trying to type 50 character cryptic codes.

That makes rebuilding my computer systems a breeze, especially since I also have backup hard drive images (using Acronis True Image Home) from various stages of installation.

Thanks for explanation John.

What program do you use to make an ISO image and will it work on all installation cd/dvd?

Also what program do you use for mounting the ISO images?

thanks
Paddy

Hi, Paddy -

I use a free program called Image Burn to create the ISO and then I use another free program called Magic Disc from Magic ISO, which I did pay for.

Ever since I started doing that, it has made my life so much easier. When I go to my parents' house and have to help them with troubleshooting their computer issues or upgrading their software, I just grab the external USB drive and don't have to worry about carrying all those CD's.

It took awhile to go through everything and copy it, but once done, it's done. I basically have a folder for each category of software (Music, Office Apps, Utilities, Games, etc) and then a separate folder for each application, or suite of applications (for example, all my PGMusic stuff is under PGMusic). Each folder clearly identifies the application name and then in parenthesis I have the username and license code if required. If the license code is too long to fit in the folder name, I put 'see license.txt' and i can copy/paste from there.

I also use a similar technique for audio CD's, but I use Nero for that. You can't create an ISO of an audio CD, but you can create an image of the CD using Nero's proprietary .NRG format. MagicDisc mounts those as virtual CD-ROM's as well. I have my CD images on another external USB drive and if I want to rip a song from the CD (either WAV or MP3), I just mount the CD as a virtual drive and tell my ripping software which drive it is. It gets treated just like a regular CD drive, just a lot faster.

Lots of options...
