In a static sequencer like RB, we don't get the "mute at bar" type of commands that you have in an auto-accompaniment program like BIAB.

Instead, we use Volume Changes to do the same thing.

One can use Automated Mixer moves, or my favorite, the PianoRoll view to draw in CC7 volume commands in the lower window with the mouse. Turn the volume all the way down for that passage, bring it back to the original setting for the next passage, etc. This is called "Drawing Volume Envelopes" and can be very powerful to get to know. For example, let's say you have made three different takes of your singing and now wish to create one track that combines only the best parts of all three. By using the Volume Envelopes to turn down the other two while turning up the desired track, we have a nondestructive way to "Comp" or make a Compilation of the three takes that sounds like one track at playback. And by 'nondestructive" I mean that all the data is still available should you want to make changes later, rather than the destructive changes of Cut and Paste (and the resulting clicks that can happen, lineup of bars, etc.).

This may seem more complicated than the BiaB way, but it is a lot more powerful and RB is designed to allow us this kind of power.

Thank you, I have used the volume adjusts before. I was working on another project and thought it would be great if you could just hilite a few bars and mute it, that it would be so quick and simple. Maybe something for the wish list. Also as someone that is realitively new to using recording software, I also thought that if I could hilite a section, eg a verse instrumentation part and change the color of that section, it would stand out as your scrolling thru on your screen. I think I saw this on protools.

Have you also compared the price of Powertracks or RealBand to the price of Protools yet?

Does Protools work on *any* Windows compatible soundcard or do they require you to also purchase their proprietary sound hardware? (they do)

It sometimes a good idea to Cut out the section you wish to Mute and move it to a separate track. You can then deal with it entirely separately for editing purposes.

Darren, I hope you are still around.

You CAN mute highlighted sections in Rb!

The old dawg here learned a new trick about this:

Quote:

I haven't got 2010 yet, but in 2009.5 the highlighted section is black. To mute a particular highlighted section, I just right click and from the drop down menu, I click on change volume and use a low number. I agree that a mute button or even a mute choice on the drop down menu would be nice.

Stan

Thanks Stan, I was not aware of this feature. I don't like it's use for Midi as I would prefer to use CC11 Expression to vary volumn, but it is excellent for use in Audio tracks.

I use CC11 now, but I just learned about it within the past 2 weeks. Initially, I was really confused, but thanks to some nice folks on here, I'm climbing up the learning curve.

You can use either.

For the task of muting, there would be no difference, audible or even datawise.

End result can and should sound the same.

Expression CC11 only differs at the OTHER end -- how loud it can get -- and that is dependant upon where CC7 has already been set, if it has, anyway.

That job, the end result, is up to you, your ears and your musical tastes and knowledge.

Tried out the "Inset Volumn Change" for a highlighted section of Audio track and it worked perfectly. In addition, the Command also includes a Volumn CC7 at the start of the track entering the original volumn. It is something one had to think about before when manually entering the Event changes. This would be useful fo Pan changes as well.

Can you recommend a good web site that can easily explain this process to someone who is not familiar with the mechanics of MIDI?

Try Google Search for "Midi Learn" which gives a variety of sites.

When I started learning about Midi, I purchased a couple of books which gave me a grasp of the subject but I only began to understand the use and inter-relationship of Continuous Controllers such as CC1 Modulation, CC11 Expression and Pitch Bends when I started beta testing for the Russian Company Ntonyx in 1998. They have two products which calculates and enters relevant Midi data to tracks according to the GM instrument being used.

The major product is their Ntonyx Style Enhancer which is also included in the Jasmine Music Program and the cut down version, which I use, the Ntonyx Stylizer. You can switch track data between RealBand and the Stylizer via the Clipboard and do complete Midi songs or one track at a time. It is simple to understand and use whereas the Style Enhancer has a very long learning curve.

Web search. LynB has started you on the way.

One other thing:

You can learn a very lot by loading up MIDI files created by other MIDIOTS into PT or RB and examining them. Find out how people do certain things in the MIDI domain. Use the Event List, the MIDI Monitor, examine the tracks themselves, look at them in the PianoRoll, etc.

Find MIDI examples that sound good to you and investigate the way they are put together.

The web is full of free MIDI downloads.

Websearch for "MIDI Ring" as just one way to find stuff.

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
