Having solved my audio in problem with an AT2020 USB mic, I'm now wanting to record my Roland JV-50 synth with PTPA. I've hooked up the MIDI cords to my Turtle Beach soundcard, but it's been about 9 years since I last tried recording my JV-50 and don't remember how I set it to send the MIDI info to PTPA. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

MIDI has no analog audio sound at all in it. It is just machine control data, sent from the computer to your JV-50. You apparently have hooked up the MIDI cables for the data side, but have not hooked up any Audio Cables for the analog sound output.

You also have to hook up Audio L and R outputs of the JV-50 to the Line Inputs of your soundcard using proper shielded audio cables and adaptors if needed in order to record that data to Audio tracks.

OK, I hooked up the audio. How do I record audio and MIDI at the same time?

The default in Powertracks is that if it detects MIDI and Audio at the same time while Recording, it will prompt you that there was Audio data present and would you like to have that on an Audio track. Just say Yes to the prompt.

Be sure to go to Prefs -> Audio first and find the Input dropdown and set it to Stereo first so that you record a Stereo Audio Track instead of mono. This can be important with many of your MIDI patches on that Roland.

Yearsago, when I was recording with this setup, I don't recall having to hook up audio as well as MIDI- if I select the Roland as my output device and plug headphones into it, I won't need to send audio to the computer, correct?

As for MIDI- any advantage to using one of these MIDI to USB cords, such as the one from M-Audio?

Thanks!

I will use the VSC DXi Synth to play the MIDI files. What do I need to do with my keyboard to get it to send and receive MIDI data- just turn it on?

Does anyone here record with a MIDI keyboard?

More progress on getting MIDI to work!

I am now able to send and receive MIDI data, AND now understand why MAC kept telling me to run audio as well- when the keyboard "Local" is set to "Off", no sound comes thru headphones connected to the keyboard, but I'm assuming sound does go through the line outs of my JV-50.

I put together serval cords to get audio to my soundcard, but because of using 4 adapters, I was getting radio better than the keyboard, so I'll be getting a phone plugs to mini stereo plug to solve the problem.

Sorry, but "IN" and "OUT" are too vague- Why not, "To Keyboard", "From Keyboard"!?

I'll let y'all know if anything else weird happens!

If the Roland has sounds of its own that you want to record, the only way to do that is to hook up its Stereo analog Line Outputs to the Line Inputs on your soundcard.

If your soundcard does not have standard MIDI in and outs on it, then that's the way to get them.

Because there are other situations where there may not even be a keyboard involved.

Whether we are talking MIDI data or Audio analog sound or Audio digital, Outputs of one device always connect to Inputs of another. Output is the functional equivalent of "mouth" and Input is the fucntional equivalent of "ears" if that helps any.
