Hi

I am trying to put together a backing track for the CCR version of Heard it Through the Grapevine.

I can get pretty close but I would really like to nail the drum part in the break section where the main riff is played.

It is played over and over as it is the main hook of the song so it would be great to get something real close.

It has got that kind of jungle drums feel to it: 1 & 2 - 3 & 4, you know what I mean. I have sat for ages auditioning different parts from different styles but it is now driving me crazy! Especially as the Drum Style Picker dialog doesnt have all the nice filtering that the main style picker has.

Just wondered if any of you good people have come across such a groove in any of the drum track, real or midi.

Many thanks
Mark

I don't know how close this is, but does the style: _POPPNOB.STY come anywhere near?

Biab is not designed for generating exact parts to classic songs. If there was a style with that drum beat in it, how many songs could you use it with? When you think about it, you'll realize it's very few. Biab is specifically built to generate gazillions of very good but generic tracks to learn with, practice with etc but not necessarily to gig with.

I found this on YouTube, there are others

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jJw4N9wjaE

If parts of this is suitable you could take this audio put it into Real Band, chop it up into segments you need like 2 or 4 bars maybe and create loops of it. Biab works well with loops. You could also create a Real Drum User Track out of this too. Check the Help files about that.

If what you need is not part of PGM's styles they give all the tools to create your own stuff. Don't forget about midi drums. Biab has a drum grid to help you create a midi file of that beat. Lots of possibilities.

Hey Bob

Thanks for the ideas.

First off, get this off my chest shocked

I use BIAB on a Mac and there is no Real Band or anything similar. Boooooo!
We pay the same price, why dont we get the same stuff!! (And I dont want to hear about RB being based on some ancient Windows app that isn't available for a Mac, heck we (Mac users) havent even got hyperlinks in the PDF manual!).

I will get off my soap box now smile

So using some of the options to 'build it yourself' are not open to me.

As for BIAB being a more generic tool rather than something to play close replicas of well known songs. Well maybe 10 years ago that was true, but now for sure, my expectation is to use it to play along to something that sounds authentic. Not so much for gigging but certainly for preparing/practicing/rehearsing for a gig before the full band get together. This is not a complaint about BIAB. I actually quite enjoy trying to piece together something that get close to an original great song. It certainly gives me a much deeper understanding of the songs and how they are formed.

Maybe loops is the way forward for the little bits that BIAB doesnt provide. I havent done anything with loops before so that will be another interesting adventure smile

If you have any suggestions on using loops I would love to hear them.

Thanks
Mark

Hi

Thanks for the idea. I had a listen but I find the bass too busy on that style. In the end I settled on _AMENROK. Pretty close for my needs, the drums in particular are nice.

Just need that 'special' bit for the breaks... I will keep looking. Maybe loops is the answer as Bob suggest.

Thanks
Mark

Great,
I'm glad you found a way forward, even if you still probably need a little tweaking smile .

Good luck, hope it works out fine for you.

Mark, do you know there is a Biab for Mac forum? You need to posting there, not here. All I can glean about Biab for Mac version is Mac users only make up about 10% of the total users and this is reflected in the numbers of active users on the forums.

I have no idea if the issues you raised have to do with a lack of resources they can spend on the Mac platform or they're simply not possible to implement. The internet is full of articles about porting Window programs over to Mac. It ain't easy apparently.

Hey Bob!

Yeah I know there is a Mac forum and if I have a Mac specific question I do use it. But as this question was (originally) a generic one about styles for a song, and as you rightly say, there are way more users in the Windows forum, I figured there was a bigger chance someone may have come across this song in the Win section.

It does raise the idea of having a 'Songs Styles' discussion forum. There is no such section hare and I would have thought it could be very useful. So long as melodies are not exchanged I doubt copyright would be an issue. It has been proven many times that a chord progression and rhythm feel cannot be copyright. Just an idea.

Thanks for the help you so often provide, much appreciated.
Mark
