A couple of thoughts.

I don't know about the 2010 hard drive. I don't have mine yet. Anxiously waiting... Plus, as has been pointed out, the type I get may not be the type you get.

An earlier version hard drive from PG Music required that I open the case and reinstall the cable, as Mac said, that had come loose in shipping. Also, I could not get that drive to power up using the Y USB cable supplied, until I put one end into a USB port on the back of my computer, and the other into a Belkin powered hub. My hub is several years old, so the model # wouldn't help, but the important thing is that it has its own power supply.

Front panel USB ports are connected to the motherboard via cable, so they should not be any different in function from one on the back that is built into the motherboard. But I admit, sometimes they are. Perhaps it's the quality of the connecting cable, I don't know, but the ones on the back are always the best choice. As mac recommended, I keep a short USB extension cable running from the back of the PC around to front, to make it convenient. I use this instead of the ports on the front.

There is one other thing, and if you want to know more, I can dig out the instructions. Apparently you can run out of USB resources and not know it. If you used a lot of USB devices in the past, and plugged them into different ports every time, you loaded a lot of drivers. Windows XP and Vista (don't know about Windows 7) used to run out of slots, so to speak, even if those devices were no longer plugged in. There are instructions for using Device Manager FROM COMMAND MODE to view and delete these drivers that are no longer needed. This trick saved me once when nothing else would. From then on, I ALWAYS plugged in a USB device to the same port every time.

Let me know if you want the instructions. Can't hurt. This would be something to try especially if you know the USB hard drive works on one machine but not another.

Thanks for the tips, Matt. And I've had a few USB devices connected, so it's good to know about the driver loading issue as well.

Here are the steps, for anyone interested in taking a look at unused USB device drivers. You might be surprised, as I was, how many there are.

To make Device Manager show devices that are not currently used:

RUN

CMD

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

devmgmt.msc

View, Show Hidden Devices

maximize the USB entries

icons for devices not currently connected are pale

right click, Uninstall (for those you know you no longer need)

EXIT

Thanx for sharing this Matt.

I arrived early to a restaurant.
The manager asks, "do you mind waiting a bit?"
I said no.
"Good", he said. "Take these drinks to table 3"

I received and set up my two 7 port powered USB hubs today with only a few setbacks but all is OK now. BIAB USB HD works fine on the hub but I haven't been able to spend much time with it yet.

This is a bit off topic so I will be glad to start a new thread elsewhere if needed. Some of my USB devices have proper names (POD XT, Yamaha MagicStomp, etc.) when selecting MIDI devices but others just show up as USB Audio Device, USB Audio Device (2), etc. I can rename them as "friendly names" within Sonar but other applications, including BIAB, only lists them as mentioned above.

Does anyone know how to rename them within Windows so I will know which one(s) I wish to use?

Matt, thanks for posting that info. I wanted to remove an entry that is listed twice as the same name but I couldn't determine which one was which as the properties info was rather vague.

TWO USB hubs on one port may be pushing things just a wee bit...

They are each on two separate ports located on the back of the PC. So far so good but I haven't had time to see how they all work simultaneously. They all power up together but I haven't had each unit in use at the same time. Only two hands and two feet limit me somewhat any way :-) .
