I'm moving to a new laptop that has enough room to put all the RealDrums and RealTracks files on the internal disk. (I'll be traveling, and as light as possible.) I used Setup on the UltraPak disk to install the program on the laptop's disk, then copied the RealDrums and RealTracks folders to the laptop's internal drive (in /Applications/Band-in-a-Box, the standard location.) All this per the instructions you get when you run Band-in-a-Box Setup.
When I run the program from the laptop, my RealTracks sound but my RealDrums don't. Changing RealDrums patches makes no difference. In RealDrums Settings I tried setting the folder by hand, even though it's the default location, just like the RealTracks. No difference. I checked the file and folder sizes, and judging by that everything is copied correctly. I tried running from the UltraPak disk again, and it works. (The Song I was testing it on is on the laptop, so it isn't a problem with the Song.)
Hints?

Be sure that you have set it to C:\bb and not C:\bb\Drums, that one caught me once.
All your RealDRums must be in a folder inside bb named Drums
You likely are using a version older than 2010, yes?

Mac version 9.5. /Applications/Band-in-a-Box/Drums is sitting right next to /Applications/Band-in-a-Box/RealTracks.

Sorry, it is hard to wear two hats here for the two platforms. <G> Please forgive the confusion.
*Make sure that RealDrums are turned ON in the RealDrums Controls, that might be all it really is. You will hear MIDI drums instead if they are turned off, or if the auto selection is set kind of high and there aren't any possible realdrums choices available for the style at that setting.
*Go thru the RealDrums settings one at a time if it is not the above, changing only one parameter at a time, if no joy, change it back before trying the next one, if anything at all changes, make a note of it as it may yield a clue.
Good Luck,

None of that seems to make any difference. Also, all the settings are the same as they are when I run the program from the UltraPak disk.

A couple of suggestions : Can you select a real drum file in the finder, right click on it, open with quicktime player and make sure the files play and they aren't corrupt.
Then (like Mac said) I'd open the real drum picker, hit the settings button and make sure real drums are enabled, and the global volume is set to 0db.
Hopefully this helps.

When you attempt to play a file that has RealDrums in it, what color is the "Drums" Track Indicator?

At least in the Mac version, the Applications/Band-in-a-Box/Drums folder contains no audio files--just text files specifying the pattern. This is the same on the UltraPak disk (where the program works) and also on the laptop's disk. So Drums is set up different from RealTracks.
There must be m4a files somewhere for the drums, right? But where? Again, as far as I can tell everything's identical in the installation that works and the one that doesn't. So I can't tell how the UltraPak one is making sounds at all. Mysterious.

Hmm... that's strange. I have m4a files as well as the txt and some bt0 files in the individual drum style folders .
Here is the contents of my "58-78Pop^" folder (the first one in list view) :
58-78POP^_080_STYLE.bt0 58-78Pop^_080_Style.m4a 58-78Pop^1-Cycling 58-78Pop^2-HiHat,SideStick 58-78Pop^3-HiHat,Snare 58-78Pop^4-HiHat,Ride 58-78Pop^5-SideStick,Snare 58-78Pop^6-SideStick,Ride 58-78Pop^7-Snare,Ride

My BossaBrushes folder has a mix including audio files, just as described for "58-78Pop^". My BossaBrushes#1 folder contains only .txt files. The same is true on both the UltraPak disk and the internal disk.
If I choose either "BossaBrushes" or "BossaBrushes#1", when I run from the UltraPak disk it works, and when I run from the internal disk one the drums are silent. When I run from the internal disk, no RealDrum sound I've tried makes any sound.
The Drums part is green in the instrument list at the top of the screen, like the Piano and Bass parts.
This is becoming bizarre …

Figured it out. The version of the program itself on my internal hard disk was older (2009 rather than 2009.5 I believe).
This is a problem with the Band-in-a-Box Setup program on the UltraPak disk. The older version was on my old laptop, and Migration Assistant moved it to the new laptop. Then when I ran BiaB Setup, it didn't detect that the program itself needed updating. Presumably it just saw that there was a version of the app and skipped installing that.
Many thanks to all who have been puzzling over this with me.

My BossaBrushes and BossaBrushes#1 look to be the same. There is only txt files in the BossaBrushes#1.
Did you try moving all the files from the preferences folder temporarily to the desktop and launching BIAB ? Possibly a preference file is corrupt.
EDIT : I see now that you've figured it out. Good going !

Ah.
The Installer has no way of knowing about downloaded and separately installed Updates. It must install the version that was in there at the time the Installer file was put together.
In this case, the Update file happened to be one that fixes something very important.
You stuck with it until you found a clue that pointed to the problem.
Good Troubleshooting!

True--except that in this case the version of the application on the UltraPak disk is itself newer than the one that got migrated to my laptop. That, the Setup program could check.
In any case, users of BiaB could benefit, as we do with lots of other apps, from a "Check for Updates…" menu option--or even an automatic check, like Adobe apps and BBEdit and so on. Then a Setup program could tie into it, running the check after doing the installation.

Agreed.
I was just trying to delineate out loud what took place so that someone searching threads for the same problem would be aware of what took place.
Actually, auto-updating of programs has been with us for quite some time now, it would be a good thing here for any online machine to offer to do, especially Mac platform, one would think. But I've noticed that Peter doesn't like to have his code do such things like automatically going online.
