I have read and seen videos that you can drag and drop midi or audios into Protools session. Can someone shed some light on how can this be done. Do you open Protools first and open Real Band second. How can Protools se Real Band as a plugin?

Open both programs, and in RB there is a button that says DAW click it and the option to start DAW plugin mode is one, choose that, and the program will be resized. Then drag the tracks to the tracks in PT. Experiment and see what happens.

Long time ProTools user here, well at least I used to be before they elimated all support for the MBox and made the Win7 drivers non-compatible with it also. But it still "runs" on the old drivers on a Win7 machine, just with its typical problems. So to make a long story short - I have moved to REAPER.

But none of that answers your question. RB is not a plug-in for PT 8.0, it just runs concurrently. However, I was never able to get the D&D going between the two programs. Perhaps you will have better luck. By the way RB does D&D into REAPER.

It is not functioning as a plugin, so I wonder why they came up with that name. It is simply a drag and drop function, nothing more, nothing fancy. But as I also tried drag and dropping files into my Protools and/or Cubase, it would not work, so I also wonder what I have overlooked. Can't get it done yet...
I tried RB as well as BiaB, it seems I cannot get it done somehow...

They did?

That shouldn't be.

Can you point to a PGMusic literature that defines the new D&D feature as a "plugin"?

Ehmmm, maybe something is mixed up now. I ment the drag and dropping feature, by clicking "plug-in-mode" in which I cannot see a relation as Biab being a plugin. It is not integrated, nor rewired through the DAW so no connection with a certain program is made. So I would not consider that a "plug-in"mode, but just a drag/drop feature... Correct me if I see things wrong again (as I often do...)

As far as I can see it now I can only drag/drop in folders, not into the DAW itself, but via a folder. So I drag it into a folder, and from there drag it into my DAW. Hmmm, I certainly hope there is an easier (direct) way?

Peter G said that if you can Drag and Drop into an Explorer window successfully, then you should be able to do so in a DAW.

Often it is a matter of finding your particular DAW's "sweet spot" where it expects the file to go. There is a tiny cursor that changes shape when you hit the right place, that may help.

Other times it may be necessary to set your DAW to receive the track. Such as Arming a track to record first, or selecting the target track, etc. Each software seems to behave a little differently fromn the other here and each one took experimentation, sometimes frustrating at first.

I get it now.

Calling the feature, "DAW plugin" on the toolbar and such is a mislead imo also. People know what "plugin" means in the sense of DX or VST and this is not that at all, it is actually better called, "DAW Window" IMO.

Well, it is what it is.

And what it is can be a powerful tool that should only get better with time.

I agree on that, it can become a nice feature. I tried your suggestions, but I could not load anything directly on a track, nor on a regionslist(protools). I had a few workarounds, which is better than the way I used before, but a direct drag and drop would be still preferable, so if anyone found a solution to that then please let us know. My workaround in protools is as follows (did not check cubase anymore, but I bet it will work in a similar way):

Biab:
For audio:
In protools choose "import-> audio" under the "file"menu, and drag drop the files into the left screen. Press "add files", "done" and select your audiofolder (probably it will be current folder, since you created a protools file already and you want all your audiofiles being together) . Then either add them to your regionslist or create new tracks for them.

For MIDI:
I chose not to use seperate tracks. That way you only have to import once. (select that option under "options for DAW plugin") Protools will change them into seperate tracks again.
So again: "file"menu-> import. then of course "MIDI", drag and drop them in the window you chose. On import it will create seperate files for each track/region.

For realband I did a quick check too:
Here unfortunately do not have the possibility of dragging the "combo" so you need to drag/drop/import each MIDI track on it's own. Audiotracks have to be dragged one by one too, but can be imported all at once, so no need for doing the same thing several times. The dragging and dropping here works by grabbing the tracknumber and drag it over.

All in all, certainly worth looking at it again by PG music to make it work easier, if it really has to be done this way.

Ironic part of it all is that I changed my settings depending on how I wanted to drag/drop (as MIDI or wav) in the DAW plugin options, but the the plugin did not need to be activated, since it works the same. So if the only function of the drag drop option is to make the window smaller and keep it on top, then wellllll... Need to say more?

Try holding down the ctrl and shift keys while dragging the Combo.

Errr....In realband???? So where to select the "combo"? As far as I know combo is only selectable in Biab, not in Realband. And for Biab I already made an explanation how to do that (in Protools), but for realband this option of selecting the combo, well I have never seen it. So if that is possible then I would like to know where. And if you ment Biab, then this will not let you drag drop the MIDI file, but converts all midi tracks into individual audio tracks. That besides, is actually an option I skipped, since I thought of using better virtual instruments for the tracks inside Protools.

I've only tried with one rather older version of Protools I have here -- and the only way I could go was to first drag 'n drop to an Explorer window. From there, Protools accepted the drop. Didn't get that deep into it, though, may be something I wasn't finding to do or the like. To my way of thinking, the "extra" Explorer window isn't that big a deal, things still happen fast enough.
