The sound on my BB is very slow relative to what I am seeing or entering. For example, if I click on a piano key, it takes about a second and a half to three seconds to hear the sound. I am using an ASIO driver. Any thoughts as to how to change this?

Thanks.

What synth are you using?

Ricky, what soundcard do you use and what is your computer's operating system? I am assuming that you have plenty of hard drive space and RAM.

Windows XP, AMD 64 Processor, 2 GHz, 1 GB Ram.

Not sure about the sound card. Only thing that I could find listed was Legacy. I am happy to search if you tell me where.

Thanks for trying to help.

Are you using 64-bit XP or 32-bit? (The VSC/DXi hasn't been known to operate in a 64-bit environment.)

No, as far as I am aware, the XP is 32 bit.

I do believe Noel had the ticket. Its the soundcard.

Lowend soundcards are unusable for recording due to Latency ( which is what you have described). No problem to fix, just pickup a Audiophile 192 (or similar) and all will be well.

Ricky,

I'd try the following combinations, test them and determine which has the lowest reaction time (latency). Note: it's probably not needed, every time I make a change in preferences, I always restart BIAB. After each change, try
  • Leave ASIO engaged but turn-off VSC/DXi
  • Leave VSC/DXi off and switch from ASIO to MME as the audio driver
  • Leave MME as the audio driver and turn-on VSC/Dxi

Let me know the outcome.

Regards,
Noel

Hi Ricky,

"Legacy Audio Drivers" in XP means that you must be using a sound device or soundcard that is built into the motherboard of your computer.

The only drivers that should be available for such are MME Windows Sound Drivers, which under XP would be the WDM sound drivers.

These have difficulty when trying to play a software MIDI synth in realtime with a keyboard controller. As you have found out.

But there is an answer for this that doesn't cost anything more than a bit of your time to download and install the ASIO4ALL software. This will convert your Windows Sound device to be able to run as if it has ASIO sound drivers and thus take advantage of being able to play that keyboard thru the VSC DXi in realtime. Works a treat and matter of fact, BiaB has been optimized for use with it as of a few versions back.

You can download the free ASIO4ALL here:

http://asio4all.com/

Read the directions and follow them to install.

Once installed, open BB and under the Options menu, choose "MIDI/Audio..." and then hit the Sound Settings button to the lower right, above the Help button. Use the dropdown that says, "MME" to select ASIO drivers and when the next window opens, highlight ASIO4ALL out of the list.

Be sure to check, "ASIO Always On" before exiting.

On some machines it is sometimes necessary to hit the Play button once in BiaB before you can play and hear the DXi synth in realtime.

Thanks to everyone for your help. I was using an ASIO driver but I switched to the asio4all one and it fixed the latency issue. What a difference. I am curious to see if it fixes the rendering issue I have been having. Will find out tomorrow.

Thanks again Mac, Noel and Jazz.

Have a happy New Year celebration!
