Yes Rob this is done already. But this seems to mean that ALL the midi is then sent to Forte. NONE is sent to my Piano VST or any other VST inserted into a track. There does not seem to be a way of overiding this setting for ONE track only.

thanks for the input

Lots of advice and things to try
I don't think VSC DXi will work in win7 64 bit ..

My suggestion - uncheck the 'redirect all midi to default midi synth' box

Then go to the tracks window and select one of the tracks you want sent to the Forte synth (the band)
Click the arrow for Edit DXi
in that window select the default synth position (port 32 I believe) and then assign the Forte to that port as the new default synth.
Then right-click that same track and select 'set all midi tracks to default synth' (or something similar)

Then play the song to make sure all tracks play to the Forte

go to the tracks you want sent to a different synth and right-click to change the port from 32 to one of the other softsynth ports (17-31 I think)

assign that port to the synth you want to use.

I use multiple synths often in RB and know it is possible to do what you want, just missing some setiing ..

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

I think I have it figured out - at last(!) Duhhh!

In order to have the Forte working for all the instruments on a built in track, then to ADD a VST instrument of your choice the "re-route the MIDI playback to a default synth" box needs unchecking. At this stage your tracks will either be silent or will play the Microsoft wavetable synth sounds.

Then you MANUALLY go through and set them all to Forte Individually AND then set up a track for your custom VSTI.

It almost seems like a workaround to me, I was expecting everything to play back through Forte (or your default GM synth) EXCEPT tracks set to a custom VST. NOT so!

I think toooooo much like Cubase!

Suggestion:
IMO there needs to be a way to overide sending MIDI to the default DXI (forte in my case) when a different VST is loaded into a track AND "re-route the MIDI playback to a default synth" is ticked. I.E. for all tracks send MIDI to default synth UNLESS (and this is the key point) a custom VST is loaded into a track.

Still... got there in the end, thanks for the input guys!

You should be able to select hte Forte as your default synth and it should play back standard GM midi files without resorting to having to assign a synth to every track every time.

You should only have to assign the *extra* synths, like your VSTi's "by the track" as needed. Using that Ports thing.

Can't see what you are doing or not doing at your end, but its possible, I do it all the time.

HI Mac,
I think it wortks liKe this:

with "re-route the MIDI playback to a default synth" ALL
MIDI gets directed to the default synth - no matter what. SO if its checked, then its no go for ALL other VSTs regardless - they dont get playback routed to them. (As I understand it as a novice)

So if you want your default synth AND other VSTs you have to do it all manually. Option 3 of the right click track menu " Set all tracks to default DXI...." can help make things a little quicker, but its still a manual process really.

Its all working now, it was just a little obscure to me.. a little counterintuitive from where I come from Cubase land.

Anyways a big thanks to you to I can see you are a major asset to the forum and have helped me already.

i'm curious bout one thing.
cos trying to get a complete picture.
i dont want to say anything in case i'm barking up the wrong tree.

ok youve confirmed you see true piano in the trak description.
now if you right clik over trak description saying true piano..
youll see a long menu plus various sub menus depending on menu choice.
could you post a pic showing your menu n sub menu settings.

heres also some interesting info.
one instrument plug in even tho the midi trak was playing back ..
i was getting no sound. it really bugged me.
sounds like a similar case to yours. i dunno mate.
now this might not apply in your case zero.
just an idea to try.
anyway..heres what happened.
when the channel was set to zero when i right cliked
on trak desrciption after loading plug in..
i got no sound.
BUT when i changed channel to 1 from 0
suddenly i got grrreat sound from the plug in.
i hope it works for you n apologies if it dont.
but in that channel sub menu after right clicking on trak description.
try every one of the channels 1 thru 16 n see if you get sound.

also in midi thru settings in prefs....
sorry i dont have an axiom.
youll notice various settings.
have you tried these ??
post a pic of your midi thru dialog settings.

Hi manning as I say its all working now. It was not a midi channel thing. Sometimes this could be the case with some instruments. Some instruments broadcast their signal to omni - meaning all channels, other you have to set. Your quite right to say that this should match the track setting. I cant find a way to post a pic but no suprises there the settings show up right in both the track and the right click menu,

i wasnt aware you knew the importance of channels etc etc.
ive seen so many folks get probs with setting midi channels
tween various devices.
and ive solved lots of friends probs with setting midi channels properly.

when your running good..post a song showing off the true piano with
the real traks.
i'm sure many folks would be interested in how true piano interracts
with the real traks.
fyi..a friend of my mums in uk has i think its called a very old
bluthner grand that was just reconditioned at significant cost.
i heard it a couple of years ago.
the owner is a concert pianist. amazeing pianist and amazeing piano sound.
ps..i goota get me an i7 with lotsa ram.
mebe next year when my finances are better.
and hopefully i7 prices have dropped.
