Greetings from Mexico,
So I needed a second computer to use with my EWI USB and E-Mu Keyboard controller. $$ spent was a big issue for me, as things are tight here (as they are almost everywhere else.) Got my hands on a used HP Dv-2000 laptop with Vista Ultimate. Since I hate Vista, my first thought was to reformat and load Win 7-32 bit, which is working great on my home machine. The laptop now has 1GB of ram in 2 512 sticks, and while I will be upgrading to 2GB, I decided to see how far I could go to get this machine to play nice with BIAB, Sonar and Sibelius. After installing BIAB 2010 build 292 and some RTs/RDs, I installed my E-mu keyboard with the Vista drivers. As I don't yet have a mobile interface for audio, I downloaded ASIO4all, latest build, in the hopes that I could at least get by. The installations of everything went well, thanks to many posts here by Mac and others. But the proof is in the pudding.......Again I have the same frustrations I always had in BIAB and Sonar.
1. I continue to get the "Device driver already in use" dialog box, even though I never installed the Roland VSC, I am just using the Cakewalk TTS-1 as my VST in BIAB. 2. BIAB see's the Emu keyboard as a valid input, BUT.....when I try to play anything, I hear nothing, even though the keys are lighting up green on the main screen in BIAB. 3. If I record something, I won't hear what I have played, BUT....I will hear it when I play back the file. 4. If I try to use ASIO4all, I get weird and inconsistant results in BIAB. 5. The EWI will not work at all.
So, while pulling out what's left of my hair, it occured to me that a post might be a better option than throwing this laptop out our 4th floor condo.........
Any suggestions or workarounds???
Thanks, Ed

Have you checked all the individual volumes for MIDI, WAV, Mic, etc? (On Vista I right-click the speaker icon, select playback, and double-click on speakers).

Hey Noel,
Oh yeah, I pretty much always go thru a checklist like that above when something isn't working correctly. I can hear the other instruments fine, and when I'm done recording what I don't hear, when I playback its great. So if I could just find a way to hear the thru channel, I'd be doing great!
Thanks again, Ed

Ed,
When I use ASIO4All, I have found that it mutes the playback level (not the recording level) for my line-1/mic. When you set-up for recording, it would be worth double-checking to see if that might be the case.

*If you see the onscreen keyboard highlighting the notes you play on the controller, then the MIDI hookup is working and getting to BiaB as it should.
*In the MIDI selection window of BiaB, try checking or unchecking the "Route MIDI Thru to..." underneath the Use DXi button.

Not sure if you are still using Vista or not on this puter, or if this may even be related to your issue but Roland VSC does not work with Vista.

Thanks guys for your help. Mac, I have tried the uncheck/check for midi thru, I spent a good 2 hours going over the PG tutorials, etc. I had this same issue years ago when I had another computer with Vista, I really do want to upgrade to Win 7 and I have the disk, but not the sys requirements to install it.

jford solved this kinda problem for me once. I hope I recall it correctly: * Go to the windows sound (start/system settings/sounds and audio) * In the Audio page: I dont remember this exactly. But change the Midi driver there to another option. So if Windows Wavetable is selected change it to your soundcard driver, or the other way around.
Maybe I find jfords post somewhere. Whenever I get the above message I just change that setting and voila.

Yes, ASIO4ALL can conflict with the GS Wavetable, and that is good advice... except that Vista for some reason doesn't allow you to choose a different MIDI output driver in it's multimedia area. In Band-in-a-Box, choose any MIDI output driver *other than* MIDI Mapper, No Sound, or GS Wavetable - If you have one available, and even if you are using DXi/VSTi - then close and re-open the program.
Here is another thing that apparently might help:
-Right-click on the speaker icon and select Playback Devices -For each of the devices listed there, double-click on it, go to the advanced tab, and uncheck all the exclusive options.
