Your laptop's mic jack is 1) Not Stereo and 2) at the wrong level and impedance to use with the Line Output of the MIDI device. It is also notoriously noisy and uses a lousy A-D converter with a jittery clock, which isn't recommended for serious music making endeavors.

So, yes, look into a better quality USB audio device for that laptop, one that has both stereo mic, instrument AND line input on it. Typically you can use one or the other but not all six at once, BTW, since the device has only L and R stereo inputs.

I don't know where people got the idea that a hardware device can be called an "interface"...
