I've got a bunch of stuff I should really get rid of -- some audio mixers, older synths, speakers, sound cards -- a variety of audio and video equipment I'll never use because I bought a bigger, better or newer replacement. In the old days, I would have placed some want ads, waited to see who showed up at the door, and maybe enjoyed the whole haggling process. But now I just want to get rid of the stuff. Problem is, I'm lazy. I want this to be easy, and while I wouldn't mind getting a few bucks, I'd even consider donating some of it to a worthy cause. I admit I've never tried Ebay or Craig's list; I suppose I could, or I could get a few pennies for the newer stuff from a music store. Any recommendations for the best way to unload older equipment?

Most everything I've sold on Craig's list has been gone either the same day or the day after. Works for me.

I donate my stuff to the high school tech program where my kids went. I usually get a receipt for a charitable donation. I'm not stuck on the donation receipt, but they often ask me to do the presentation at an assembly and I get the kids to use the gear, sing some songs etc....
2 keyboards, 2 amps, 3 mixers, 2 old mics and stands and 4 speakers are there.
I know I could sell it....

My experience with craigslist has been good with lower-priced goods. The downside is that you have a limited market, and buyers want to haggle down. More in a moment.
I have some more valuable stuff (specifically, some RCA BK-5A mics and accessories, if anyone's interested) that I will be flogging on ebay. Downside is the hassle of packing and shipping, plus some risk with payment if outside the US. Upside is that bidders drive the price up.
I got more and more nervous advertising on craigslist. As the goods became more valuable, I became more and more concerned about having strangers to my home, counterfeit payment, and the like. By the time I finished with that phase of things, I was telling buyers that I would take their drivers' license info and call it in to a third party (which I did); that I would do business during daylight hours only; and that payment would be taken at a bank in order to ensure valid funds. I arrived at this point through hard experience with each series of buyers.
It was at that point that I realized I had no business dealing those goods out of my home. Ebay is really the only practical way to sell vintage gear to a wide enough market and get true market value. Start small and work up. I haven't sold there yet, but done a fair amount of buying. My experiences have all been good.

Check and see if there is a "Music-go-round" near you. They buy used equipment. Don't know how well they pay. Wyndham

counterfeit payment
I insist on cash. I've also met folks at a bank, where they can take out the cash, so they don't come to my home at all. I also insist on valid (not that I'm an expert) ID, and I take down all the info. But in general, cash works pretty well, and even better if I see them get it from the bank.
I agree, you have to be careful. A few prudent steps go a long way to protecting yourself.
When I sold my mini van, the best offer and the best response came from Craig's List. The loonies I ended up dealing with actually came from responding to the paid ad I made. Go figure.
I'm lucky that I generally have a pretty good market for just about anything I'm selling, being in the Washington, DC area.

e-Bay is best, but make sure to drive some sales there by letting folks know on appropriate forums and so forth that the item is there.
There's a couple vintage synth forums online and it would behoove you to become a member there first.
Vintage mixers; for recording use, unless it's one of the big desirable names like an SSL, Neve, API, etc. - you probably will have some difficulty there. There is a market for old Mackie and Allen & Heath mixers for road use..
Again, do your homework on active forums as to pricing and so forth, then be reasonable about your initial pricing on e-Bay based on your research at forums, what past items have sold for, etc. Then on those same forums, let folks know that you've got something they want for sale on eBay and put the link in the forum post.
Don't put a minimum bid amount in. Put the lowest amount of money you are willing to accept for your gear into the initial bid price and let things go from there. You may be pleasantly surprised.
I did this for a pick that was thrown into the crowd at the 2003 G3 concert - a Joe Satriani pick. I put the pick up for sale, along with my ticket stub, after joining the Joe Satriani website forum. I put up the pick and stub on e-bay, then let the folks know at the Satch forum that it was there.
I cleared $41 and some change after several fans tried outbidding each other in the last 1/2 hour of the auction. I started the bidding at $5.
Make sure you check on shipping price for your items with USPS, UPS or FedEx to the farthest point away from you in the US (I recommend only selling inside country) and list that as the shipping price. I got burned on an Alesis effects unit I sold (first thing I ever sold on eBay) when the price I accepted really didn't clear me much more money than what I paid for it as well as the shipping cost (I paid Mailboxes etc. to pack it - big mistake).

ebay is the only way to go.
I've sold guitars and electronics on there, including one guitar for $7,000.00. Iternational sales are a pain. Especially if they don't speak your language.
But you need to build up a rating or people won't buy from you.
Become an ebay member. Buy some stuff, sell some stuff. Then sell the things you actually think have some worth.
Also, you can refuse international sales in your listing.
Don't do Craig's list unless you do cash at a public place.
Bob

Check on that Music-Go-Round.
If there's one near you, there's no faster and no easier way to turn that old gear into a bit of cash.
But if yer like me, you usually leave the place with something else that you saw and just had to trade your old gear and yer new money for...

Or for those who are tiring of Ebay, there's a similar venue (Ebid), which I've started using for several reasons. They allow PayPal payment, and other methods. http://us.ebid.net/index.php

Band-in-a-Box 2026 Video: AI Stems & Notes - split polyphonic audio into instruments and transcribe
This video demonstrates how to use the new AI-Notes feature together with the AI-Stems splitter, allowing you to select an audio file and have it separated into individual stems while transcribing each one to its own MIDI track. AI-Notes converts polyphonic audio—either full mixes or individual instruments—into MIDI that you can view in notation or play back instantly.
