Nice tone indeed. Nonpressure player, too.
And the high C at the end, almost effortless.
Rare to see in someone of that age.

Yeah, what Mac said and she plays off-center very well, too.

Hi All,
OK, I went back and listened, and watched, again. She really does make it look almost effortless. Even on the end, it looks like she's just holding the horn to her lips and letting it play itself. lol.
Later, Jim

Very nice control. Stan, I don't know if you play brass instruments, but playing off to the side is no big deal. A lot depends on how your teeth are set up. Mine, which are a mess, force me to play off to the side as much as she did, maybe more so. Funny, though, when I play soprano sax, it's dead straight ahead.

Yes, I do play trumpet, cornet, and flugel. I was not criticizing playing off to the side. Only commenting that she makes it look very easy and relaxed. Sad to say that I have to "play down" due to a receding jaw and overbite, but you gotta do what's necessary to make decent sounds come out. She certainly did that.

I completely agree on all of that!
I took a beating from one regional orchestra guest director in junior high who said I would never be able to play off to the side like I do, so I'm sensitive to this topic. If he were still alive, I'd give him a nice F over high C right now to think about. I was a junior high band director myself once, too, and it's amazing to consider what I might have said to a student that I might regret now. Can't think of anything, but who knows?

Her name is Melissa Venema, she is Dutch, and she was 13 in the video. http://andrerieufan.com/2008/06/30/andre-and-melissa-venema.aspxGary

Cracked me up, some idiots on YouTube saying 'oh, she faked it.' Yeah, in front of Andre Reiu and his orchestra she faked it, or they tried to do a pro looking video that shows her faking it.
LOL

Stan, are you on Trumpet Herald?
Well Matt, My band instructor told me that since I played down, I would never amount to anything as a trumpet player so I should either switch to another instrument or quit. Since there were no other instruments available, I quit----for 50 years. Yes, I still go on TH from time to time, but that place cost me a lot of $$ by introducing me to the mp safari and sooooo many different horns.

So you're a comeback player, Stan. Very good.
There are so many stories out there about people who USED to play trumpet. I often wonder what they know that I don't.
I play trumpet because the band director gave my older brother Sherwood a trumpet, and figured he could teach me. They had given him a trumpet because they didn't have any more tenor saxes like he asked for. Took me 50 years to come full circle, by becoming a sax player too. If you go to Performers on Trumpet Herald, you will see a thread on my brother, who taught me how to play. Monster lead player and NYC session player and teacher. He is another case of someone who used to play trumpet; he passed away last week. At least one other BIAB poster knew him.

Sorry about your loss, Matt. I'm just an intermediate player and do it for fun. My wife plays flute and we play at retirement homes and hospitals for free. We are also in a 20 piece band that does the same thing and the community band. You sound like a very versatile musician. The more I play and get involved with backups, the more I find out how little I know. I do enjoy learning new things though so frustration doesn't stress me out like it has in the past. Actually, I feel blessed that I can play anything at all and enjoy music so much. I'm also blessed that there on folks on here and also the TH forum that are so very kind in helping some of us dumb geezers. Without that help, I probably would have just thrown everything on the shelf and forgot about it. When you look back, say 30 years ago, it's incredible how far technology has come in developing music-related hardware and software.
