I am planning to buy a Ketron SD2, and need to understand how it is going to be connected to my PC.
I've searched the subject already but I am still not sure on a few things.
I use a TASCAM US-144MKii (it has MIDI OUT AND IN jack which are currently not being used).
I have connected my speakers to the Headphone output on the TASCAM.
(In the BIAB Midi/Audio Settings, I have Midi Input to TASCAM, Midi Output to TASCAM... and so far I use the Roland VSC DXi, and in the Audio Driver Setting, I have the TASCAM seleced for speakers in the AUDIO out window.)
Occasionally I need to use my Behringer Mixer so I prefer that it stays OFF but connected to the TASCAM just in case (Stereo RCA cables from Mixer's Alt 3-4 Channnel to TASCAM's Stereo RCA Input, and RCA cables back from TASCAM's RCA Output to one of the Mixer empty stereo tracks).
I see the SD2 has MIDI IN and THRU plus STEREO RCA Out...
If I had to guess, I would connect the MIDI out from TASCAM to MIDI IN on the SD2. Right?
Would I also need to hook up the RCA out on the SD2 to TASCAM's Input Channel (where the Mixer is currently plugged in)? and Why? I've never use a midi synth so far, so I am not sure...
Would the SD2 show up as one of the choices in the BIAB Midi Input/Output menu window, or just the TASCAM?
If I decide to keep the mixer plugged in, Can I plug in the SD2 to the Mixer, using RCA cables from SD2's Out to one of the Mixer's free stereo channels? And would I still be able to see the SD2 from BIAB?
My uses for the SD2 would be 1) to improve the quality of sound coming from BIAB as back track while I play my guitar, and 2) record my guitar along with music made in BIAB (in BIAB or RealBand). I am not sure it that is the same when rendering my music to CD or mp3?

You will need to route the two RCA's from the SD-2 to the Line Input on your sound device somehow, for that is where the Audio sound generated by the MIDi data comes from. If your mixer doesn't have two more RCA connects, then you will need to get some adaptors to go from RCA's on the Ketron side to two 1/4" Line Inputs on the mixer side. "Barrel" adaptors that convert RCA female to 1/4" male are the most economical method, used in conjunction with a common stereo RCA-to-RCA audio cord such as used with tape decks, CD players and other stereo component gear. Barrel Adaptor You'll need two, one for each channel. The next thing you will have to know is that when using any hardware MIDi synth such as the fine sounding SD-2, you will no longer enjoy instant "Rendering" of MIDI songs to audio. You will have to arm a stereo track for recording and record the performance from start to finish via those Line Inputs. That is because the sounds being generated now take place outside the realm of the host CPU in your computer. Have Fun, --Mac

Thanks MAC as usual, you're the first to respond.
No worries about the adapters.... I bought a whole package of them when I bought the Mixer. They are very handy indeed. Thanks.
Your comment regarding hardware MIDI synths not be able to enjoy instant "rendering" was the biggest eye-opener/lesson for me... I guess that makes sense.... it would be just like me playing my guitar or you recording a part playing your keyboard... can't be instant!
But I still need to grasp what you mean by "You will have to arm a stereo track for recording and record the performance from start to finish..." Do you mean I'd have to go to, say, RB and record the parts (together or separately) on a different track in WAV form, then do a "rendering"? And how is that done? I know how to record my guitar onto an audio track, but how do I record the midi parts from the same song back onto itself on new audio track(s)? I don't know if my question is clear... :-(

You could also simply use the one Audio Track inside BiaB.
As to how, that's a bit long to type out a step-by-step here, and it differs slightly with different soundcards. Read up on how to record audio in the .pdf manuals and Help files for the two programs first. And experiment. Its not that hard.

Oops, sorry MAC, I was just going to ask you to hold on before you respond, as I am doing exactly what you suggested. Now that I better understand the issue, I am going though some of your old posts which are begining to make a lot more sense to me LOL! I'll come back if I get stuck. But Thanks again my friend!

My ketron goes to my Bose toneport which is a mixer on steroids. It's has usb in and out. Out of curiosity I started Audacity and found it worked perfectly, well except for the fact that the Bose is 'Mono'. But start the song, sing the song, click stop and I have a recording. Maybe I'll just double it by copying both takes to a stereo track. I also think maybe muting or turning down some instruments, recording twice with the instruments on/off and then put each on a stereo track so the guitar is left and the fiddle is on the right and the drums are in the middle.
There is a song about that, the guy on the left was on the right...Johnny Cash??? Hmm...

A doubled mono track to two tracks played at the same time sounds just like a single mono track. Maybe a tad louder.
But you should use the Audacity's split to stereo command to make mp3's just to make sure that a mono mp3 file will be compat with all players.
