Here are the criteria: I play Country & Oldies R&R. Small Places not too loud but you know.......... 1. No more then $400 for a pair 2. Obviously to use with BIAB/RB will play bass live as well through them. I have a mixer 3. Fidelity is more important then loud 4. Prefer wood boxes over plastic so I can stack on the floor but again fidelity is most important I'm just way out of the loop on this. Looking for recommendations from someone who actually own & use what they recommend. I can read specs.

I gather you are looking for PA speakers, something to take to a gig.
Is your mixer a powered mixer? We need to know that.
In the meantime, here's something to think about in a different direction. Since you say you perform on bass, have you considered a piano amp? In small venues, I don't use a PA; I use a Hartke piano amp. This has RCA inputs for a CD or MP3 player or Line Out of a laptop, and can accommodate a strong bass signal without damage to the speakers, but it also reproduces the full range of frequencies for the CD etc. [Although I primarily play wind instruments, sometimes I've done bass parts using the wind controller.]

Yes Matt I have a mixer with a power amp. Just need boxes. Doubt I could get powered speakers for the money I have available.
Funny you should mention the piano amp as It was something I also thought about. I'll check on the one you mention. It could also serve as a bass amp if I should gig with a band.

Look at the Peavy KB 4. 15" speaker, 4 channel on rollers and handle.
I play BIAB and guitar through it and have used it in a Church gig and several
small venues. Moves in and out fast.Handles bass very well.

Sounds good, John. Yes, the money makes more sense now.
For my small PA, I use Yamaha 12" monitors (the ones with the flat corner, so they can be used to angle up as monitors, or be placed on speaker stands. The speaker stands, to get them off the floor, makes a huge difference in covering a room full of people and things.
If you go the piano amp route, consider what Dave mentioned about wheels and handles. As you know from being a bass player, the magnet alone must be big, and that makes things heavy. My Hartke has neither wheels nor handles. Every year that I get older, my amp gets heavier. I wonder why that is?

Bang for the buck wise I highly recommend the Peavey PR12. I've never owned a pair, but I do have first hand experience of them in a real live situation.  Like these. http://cgi.ebay.com/Peavey-00583900-PR12...=item5ad677803ePros : 1. At ~25 lb they pass my liftability test. (barely ) 2. They sound good at LOWER volumes as well as higher. (subjective: ymmv) Cons: 1. Its always a bigger hassle to set up a pa arrangement than an all in one solution. 2. Using them as a straight ahead instrument amp can be problematic unless you have some really good signal shaping and compression devices for you instrument, used as a preamp in the signal chain. Jim, I have been looking at those for awhile. I've always owned Peavey gear and have been very satisfied. I just plug my bass into the mixer with a DI. My bass has real nice 3 band active EQ. When I played in a band and used a bass amp all EQ on the amp was set at 0 . I can get the sound I want from the bass. Doubt I'll ever play in a band any way. If needed in the future could add a sub.I'm just partial to 3way enclosures.

John, Jim and Dave all mention Peavey. I have had very good results with their PA speakers, too. Very good value for the price, and long-lasting construction. I used a set for 25 years.

In that price range I would look at Peavey too. If you can stretch your budget with $40 I would suggest the Peavey PV 115. These units house a 15" driver, which will give a more powerful and warm sound than the 12".

For a small room, I prefer the clarity of a 12" speaker set. But try them both and decide.

That is why I suggested the 15" version.
But indeed it is always best to testdrive 'em yourself. Just have the store set up a couple of options in your budget and let your ears be the judge.

Yes, the 15" is safer with a live bass; good point.

Carvin stuff is generally good stuff... If Hartley's sales rep doesn't want to demo, then he doesn't want a sale IMO. At that point, the Carvin order would be the same thing, no demo, but they are known for great customer service, much as PGMusic along those lines, so getting it from Carvin and trying it out should be rather painless. That and the Carvin is very likely to sound great, work great and do what you want it to do. Incidentally, this year at NAMM, Carvin introduced the BX1500 Bass that puts out 1500W RMS, or 900W into 4 ohms, (!) that only weighs about 12 pounds. Impressive use of the latest technology, switching power supply plus class D digital power amps, two power amps in the thing that can be bridged if necessary. Don't you have a local music store that would let you try different speakers before you decide? I know I have one within driving distance that just tells me to load up what I want, test drive it for a week or two and then make my decision. This way I get to try the equipment at home, if I like what I hear at home I take it on a job. If I still like it we start discussing price, and more than not we come to agreement on price. With this said and as much as I like to get the best deal I can it is very nice to be able to look someone eye to eye when purchasing musicial equipment or anything else for that matter . . . just my thoughts.
