Hi, This is not a BIAB question but still, maybe there is someone here who can help me with the following problem. I've got the SD 2 and I'm using Sonar. I have found some pretty cool contemporary jazz midi files on the web. Most of them play flawlessly but when I get one that has a pretty dense arrangement or lots of pitch bend events, I will get a note that sticks, which of course ruins everything. And it doesn't seem to be always the same note, so the midi file seems to be OK. My question is: What can I do to prevent that from happening? Is it a setting in Sonar or is it the ketron itself? It would be great if someone could help me with this. Thanks

I would suspect the midi file first, since any time I've had this problem, that's what it turns out to be. Take a look at the midi file in piano roll view. If you see several extra long notes, with overlapping notes (the same note being keyed before the end of the last time it was keyed), that's probably it. There is an update for the SD-2, just in case you're not running the latest version. http://www.ketronus.com/downloads.php While you're there, you can pick up some drum loops for it as well, if you haven't already. Hope this helps. Later, Jim

This is your problem. Never say never but this is usually nothing to do with your synth. It's simply responding to commands embedded in the midi file. Way too many potential things to list here except to say you're dealing with a file that somebody else created and who knows what he used to create it. Trust me, they're not all created equal. Maybe that person was a total idiot, maybe the file started out great and this person found it and modified it to fit his synth or added extra parts to it, it could have sysex in it, it could have tons of controllers in it, lots of things to think about. Hung notes tend to be pitch bends with no stop command after them, usually stringed instruments. After 6 or 7 years of downloading files I have a folder with about a dozen files in it that I still can't get to play right and I'm fairly good at midi now. If you really want to learn midi then this file could be a good teaching exercise for you, if you just want that song then Google another version of it, you may find one that plays correctly.

When I play the files in question back it is never the same note that sticks, which is why I thought that it might be something other than the MIDI file that is causing it.Since it happens when i go through Sonar and Media Player I'm sure it is not any setting in Sonar.I am running the Ketron through a Tascam US 428 into my computer.I'm not sure if that's the culprit. I was on the Cakewalk forum and someone suggested I get a separate Midi to USB cable for the Ketron. I found this on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/MIDI-Cable-Convert...oductPromotionsI ordered it, figured it is cheap enough to give it a try. As far as getting another version, that is probably impossible. One of the songs is King of the Lobby,Brecker Brothers, another one is Ebony Jam by Tower of Power. That's the stuff that I cannot sequence easily myself and of which there is very little selection on the web, unfortunately.

Is this update for the SD2 necessary for someone (like me) who just purchased the SD2? (I am only going to use it with BIAB/RB).
Dick
What about the drum loops, was that not part of the package I purchased?

As far as updating the Ketron, I'll stay away from that because I tried that once and my Ketron blew up.The dealer I bought it from did replace it eventually but kind of reluctantly so I don't want to be in the same position again.

Very doubtful. There hasn't been an upgrade in a long time. If it works, don't fix it.

they are downloadable from the Ketron site. They are merely .MID files of drum loops that you can splice together in a static sequencer like Powertracks or Realband or the like. We have Realdrums with pgmusic products so I have never used the Ketron "Live Drums" MIDI loops. They are called Live Drums in the sense that they were recorded by a live session player playing on a MIDI drumset.

I don't think that a hanging note problem lies within the SD-2 itself. It is, after all, a State Machine that awaits a command and executes same.
BUT -- if something is interrupting that command, Houston we have a problem.
Most likely culprit is the MIDI connect driver or possibly the IRQ for it is being shared with something else on the computer that is forcing a hardware interrupt at the worst time, such that the SD-2 receives the note on data, but is not getting the Duration data right. (Most MIDI files do not contain Note Off data as it is superfluous if you think about it. A Note On plus Duration value accomplishes the same thing with only half the amount of data needed in a file, you see.)
Sometimes the easiest way to correct something like that is the new MIDI interconnect.
BUT -- if the MIDI interconnect you are using is also your Audio device, you would want to check that critical IRQ table to see if the sound device is being shared with another high bandwidth device on the same IRQ. Not good. Do not take Windows work for it, windows will report that all is okay and the devices are operating properly even if every device on the puter is sharing the same IRQ. Instead, look at your IRQ table and see for yourself. Ideally, you want to see you sound device all alone with its own IRQ number.

Thanks for the explanation, Mac.IRQ sounds vaguely familiar but not enough to know what to do. Where would i find the IRQs and how would I get the midi part on it's own number? Is there maybe a software program that could sort this out for me?

Hey Mac, I just read the article and learned how to get into the IRQ list and I think I solved the problem. The only conflicts I found were on my PCI card for my USB slots VIA rev 5 or later USB Universal host controller is what it is coming up as. I have 4 usb slots on this card. Two of them are on address 3 and two of them are on 5 then the same thing shows up again with two slots at address 12. I'm thinking these are not on the card itself and are the ones for my computer keyboard and mouse. All the card slots are full. An air card for my web access, my printer, my Tascam US428 control surface and finally a USB hub with 4 extra slots, which are not currently used. I had the Tascam contoller and the Aircard on slots 1 and 2( sharing the same address I assume), followed by my printer and the USB hub. I put the Air card onto slot 3, so that it is a different address from the Tascam and that did it. I had another sequence (Lightyears,Chick Corea) with a lot of pitch control events for the guitar and sax tracks. That was unplayable before and I thought that it might have been a bad sequence, but that plays OK now too.Amazing how one little thing can mess up so many seemingly unrelated functions So thank you Mac for pointing me in the right direction.I could have never figured this out on my own!

Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.
Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
