I have 2 HDs. One internal 320 gb and one USB external Seagate 500 gb. To obtain max efficiency where should I install BB and Reaper programmes and where should I install realtracks and realdrums? Also my songs? HD space is not an issue regards and thanx Plotzie

Really doesn't matter if you are only using a two input soundcard.

As long as your external HD runs at 7,200 rpm and has a buffer size of 32. you show be ok.

Practically, Mac is correct.
In principle the programs should reside on one HD and the data and where you record, if you record, on another. That reduces the 'reads' of the disc where you program is operating ... which, as the load of tracks and data increase, can become critical.

When someone is using a two input soundcard, as most do, and not a multiple input soundcard for multitracking simultaneously more than one stereo track or two mono tracks at a time, there is no need to be concerned about the track storage/disk streaming situation with today's hard drives. Thing of the past.
For those attempting to multitrack with a multiple input soundcard, the only thing to be concerned about with two hard drives is the place where your recording program places and uses its Temp audio files.
BiaB is hard coded to always use the C: drive's Temp allocation. Can't change that and don't need to do so.
RB and PT have a place in the Audio settings where you can reallocate the Temp Audio Stream from the default of C:\Temp to another drive. If using a multiple input soundcard, you should make that the first logical partition on your second or other hard drive and not the same as the C:\Temp. This frees up your C drive to run only the OS and the host program, which should be installed on C: also.
The above information is very little understood around the web. Read it and understand. Storage of the songfiles can take place literally anywhere as when you are recording and playing back from the host program that place is not addressed in realtime. The files are loaded into that critical Temp area and that is where realtime streaming in and out takes place while you are working in the program. Has nothing to do with where the file is saved at all.
