One thing that I did notice was that this stopped happening as much when I stopped using software MIDI output solutions that load into RAM. Hmmmm... The hardware MIDI synth has made for a less freeze or crash or error prone Band in a Box here.

Fully agreed.

Good comments for this little record. Thanks.

My work habits would make it hard to get into that trouble. I change something and then Save. I change something else and then SaveAs "mysong01"

That explains a lot, and also may explain why I have experienced the bug more than others: Because I'm just noodling around with the product, trying this, clicking that -- Gee . . . what does THIS button do . . . BOOM! -- I haven't really been hitting the save button much. (Now, at my day gig, when I'm writing a long report in Word or planning a project in MS Project, I hit the save button every ten minutes or so, almost unconsciously.)

BTW, not to beat a dead horse, but it happened again today. (I figure the more I write about this anomaly, the more the SW maintenance gurus will have to go on.)

I had keyed in two chords, Cmaj7 and Bb13, for two measures each and just repeated that for like 32 bars. I wanted to see what kind of solo BIAB would generate over that. I was tooling around with various MIDI styles. Tons of fun for this noob. Then I keyed in some chord subs here and there and tooled around some more. No prob. I then wondered what RealTracks would sound like in lieu of the MIDI styles I had chosen, so I clicked the Style Picker button and hit Play from within the dialog. That's when something happened. After the RT's had generated and I heard the song start playing, I closed the Select Style Prototype window, and that' when I noticed that the few chord subs I had keyed had reverted to a previous state.

Another BTW: I just can't get over the quality and realism of the RealTracks Tenor Soloist that comes with the basic BIAB package. I shall be forking over more money for more RT's shortly!

OK, I got one.

I had been working on a new song and saving it as I went along.

I was in Editable Notation Mode.

Using the mouse, I accidentally placed a note too low on the staff. I did CTRL-Z to undo the note, and I lost almost the entire melody and almost all the chords except for a bit of each toward the very beginning of the song.

Edit, Undo did not bring the missing parts back.

I immediately exited BIAB without saving the song, and reloaded BIAB and reloaded the saved song, which was OK.

Man, you've doubled your average - 1 per decade now!

Matt's description is exactly how I've always seen it happen, too, except I'm always in that staff roll mode. Never thought to mention that before.

Yes, that's an important clue, to tell PG Music exactly where we were when it happens.

I just remembered another thing.

After an attack, when you look in the Edit menu, there's a choice of UNDO (somethingorother) and REDO (Delete Measures). It's the REDO that brings things back to normal. I know, REDO sounds entirely wrong. Nobody wants to do that rotten thing again.

The UNDO choice has no effect, despite sounding like just what you'd need.

For what's worth, I've experienced a similar data loss when canceling an "F5" style change. Even the melody disappeared. Although I don't want to experience another "next time", I think I'll try to recreate the situation to see if "undo or redo" suggestions will work.

I realize after reading this that it happened to me once. And I use the software for 2 to 3 hours a day. This was about 2 weeks ago and I was sticking in notes and adding Realtracks and something I did erased everything and I was looking at the previous song. It was like a delete note and wham, I had the chords from the previous song in there I think the song title was the same. I reloaded and thought I'd had a mini stroke and just kept on, because I never saw it before, nor have I seen it since.

Makes me wonder this. I had a piece of software for automated banking that was running the largest chain of fitness clubs in Canada automated payment department, and I had what you'd call the Alice in Wonderland hole somewhere. During testing I kept getting outlandish things happen. I eventually stayed up 3 days straight and found it. It was like if this and this and this and this then jump and do that type of thing and the subroutine punched up several lines of identical data.

In this case I'm wondering if there is a similar type of problem with the undo feature where in a certain state it goes back to as far as it can, and undoes the max. levels of undo rather than just one.

In my case that company has expanded to about 200 clubs across Canada, and I sold my wife with the company and she's still there. I should have asked for a penny a transaction I'd be so rich. I got 3 grand for Y2K work, found out after the were 3 quotes, 90 grand, 58 grand and mine at 3. I sang what kind of fool am I for months. It took an hour to change 2 fields from 2 digit date codes to 4. Logged on from home. Had the wife run a full report on a test system, changed the data base, never touched the code, and she ran the same report Sunday from home and everything worked. I thought I stole 3k until I heard the other quotes.

Software is a funny thing. They have a programmer from Toronto doing some of what I did, they come up with some hair brained scheme like if a cat goes across the road in Victoria on a full moon pay commissions at 1.5% during March break if the sale was made before noon. I used to just say no. Anyway they spent 5000 dollars recently, would not work. The guy goes back, my wife shows me the code, I point she shakes her head and fixes it. I told her to tell them I wanted 1k for the work but didn't get it LOL.

I just had another go of the bug.

This time, I was adding a couple of chord options -- a shot and a hold in the same measure, at the end of an intro to " Como Fué ".

When I returned to the main screen there was an odd sort of screen flash; the last 8 bars of chords had been erased. There was no melody yet, so that didn't enter into it. The "Edit|Redo Delete Bars" routine restored everything again.

Somebody else reported the bug happening after this same maneuver. He had entered Chord Options by F5, whereas I used the right-click.

That's pretty much the way it happens to me, too. (The screen flickers.)

But listen to this one.

Although I don't recall precisely what I was doing, an entire song disappeared and reverted to a previous song I had been working on about five minutes before!!

I'm almost certain I hadn't yet saved the current tune, and I'm not even sure that I saved that earlier one, since I was just tooling around. Pressing REDO -- not UNDO -- restored what I was currently working on.

Actually, I have read that before, about reverting to the previous song.

Do you at least recall what mode you were in at the time? Notation edit, piano roll, chordsheet, ?

I'm 98 percent certain I was in the Select Styles Prototype dialog.

The other two percent is I had my head up my ass.

I can make this mass erasure happen every time with the following steps:
1) open BIAB
2) add chord somewhere
3) delete the added chord with the Delete key and add more chords
4) press F5 and click cancel => back to the same chords as after 2)

Good find! Happens the same way here, every time, without fail.

This is the first time anybody here has been able to reproduce this thing at will. Many thanks, jannesan !

Janne,
Yes, that's it! I can reproduce that, and have fixed it for a patch t appear within a few days.
Many thanks!

As mentioned, if it happens, (before the new patch) you can do a Edit-Redo to get the information back.

Have Fun!

I unfortunately experienced the same thing last night on a new piece I had been working on. I saved it (I thought) and tried to make a .wav file of it to listen to on my MP3 player so I could determine where to go with it next. When I closed BiaB it asked if I wanted to save it. I assumed that making the .wav file made BiaB believe I had changed something. I saved without thought and went to play the piece in Soundforge where I usually convert it to mp3. There was no melody. So, I re-opened BiaB 2010 only to find the melody completely missing.

I really liked the piece and the melody maker had made a very usable melody. I hadn't been working on it long and can't really remember how all 32 bars went so reconstruction won't happen. DRAT!!!

Is this a known bug and is there a fix being done?

Disappointedly,

RichR

You're just not paying attention, Rich. Read three posts above, to soak up the news.

It won't resurrect any of our tunes that got murdered, but it's great anyway.

Hi All,
On the erasure subject, I have experienced when trying to open an mp3 file into the chord wizard, I get a driver error message and when I look again for the mp3 it has dissapeared from the computer altogether which is a bit of a worry. The wizard/file delete problem is not solved until I eventually have to re-install biab. It's happened on 2 seperate occasions now yet at the time the rest of biab works fine, must have lost about 10 mp3 songs though.
Jeff

Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
