What is the exact brand and model of keyboard?
What are you using for the MIDI connect to PC?
BTW, I generally just set my keyboard to "All" in the channel dept. and then BiaB can sort out the Thru channel on its own.

Inside BiaB, Options -> MIDI/Audio...
On the lefthand side of the MIDI window, select the USB port that your keyboard is connected to.
Hit the "Use DXi" checkbox and make sure that the VSC DXi control panel opens. If it doesn't, use the synth dropdown to find it and select it.
Close the VSC window by hitting the little X at top right.
Now, above the Help button in the MIDI window, hit Audio Settings.
Top Right of Audio Settings window, see if you have any ASIO drivers where it says, MME. if you don't you will have to download and install ASIO4ALL drivers in order to be able to play that VSC DXi softsynth in realtime with a keyboard.

Thanks Mac. I've downloaded the driver. Not sure exactly what I should do next (I am not a computer techy!), daft as it sounds I don't even know if I've installed it! Does it happen automatically?? THere is now an icon on the tool bar at the bottom of the screen, and if I click on that it gives my sound card (?) in the WDM device list. If I go back to the MIDI / Audio settings window, ASIO4 is now the default so I guess I've done something right, but my keyboard still isn't working. Do I need to do anything else? Forgive my ignorance!

Hello Calpol, What is the exact name of the MIDI Input Driver that you have selected in the Opt. | MIDI Driver Setup dialog in Band-in-a-Box? When you play a note on your Edirol keyboard, do you see any note "light up" on the on-screen Band-in-a-Box keyboard? As long as your computer is receiving MIDI data from the Edirol keyboard, you *should* see activity on the on-screen BB keyboard, whether or not you actually hear anything. If not, that is the first thing you'll need to solve. - Make sure that Opt. | Preferences | MIDI Options - 'MIDI Thru' is checked. (by default it would be) - Check the MIDI Monitor (Window menu), filtered to show only computer MIDI input. If nothing happens when you play your keyboard, then for some reason MIDI data isn't making it from your keyboard. Check your connection between the keyboard and computer - Make sure that you have the MIDI cable connected from the MIDI OUT port. - If it's not working still, you probably need to install or update the drivers. Check the downloads at the Edirol site...e.g. http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=736Once you have that working (note appears on the BB screen), then you can set up low latency play-thru with the ASIO4ALL driver and VSC-DXi and that should work great. One alternative method of inputting a melody is to 1.Go to the Play menu and make sure 'Wizard Playalong Feature' is enabled. 2.Start recording. 3.Choose any key on your computer (qwerty) keyboard (N for example) and strike it in time with the notes of your melody. The idea here is not to get the note pitches right, just the durations. 4.When you have finished, keep the take. Next, put the Notation Window into editable notation mode. From here, you can step forward or backward note by note using the keypad "Ins" and "Del" keys. While doing so, you can use the up-down arrow keys to change the pitch each note. This method works great for non-keyboardists, and is also useful for adjusting existing melodies.

Don't worry, Calpol we'll get you there. This stuff confused the heck out of me some years ago too. You do have to be a computer techy or you'll just frustrate yourself. Look at what you have to go through now with a new big screen tv, satellite box, home theater speakers, HDMI, DVD players, all that. Go to Mac's "Audiominds" website under his signature, click on "getting started" in the upper left and start reading all about it.

Andrew, Thanks for your assistance. I've checked all the various menus you mentioned, and all appears to be as it should. My keyboard is an Edirol MIDI keybiard Controller PCR-M1. I'm using it with a laptop, connected through USB port. I also have Sibelius 6 on this laptop and the Edirol works perfectly with that. But maybe Sibelius is causing some conflict?? I have set the keyboard to channel 5, as suggested earlier, concerned that it might then confuse Sibelius, but that still works. ????? Sue

Hi,
When you play notes on your Edirol keyboard, do you see any activity on the Band-in-a-Box on-screen keyboard?

If you are leaving Sibelius running but minimized when you start BiaB, you can't do that. Sibelius has already "grabbed" your chosen MIDI driver. Close Sibelius down completely, wait a few seconds and then start BiaB.

It's a strange problem... I would suggest trying that driver update, and then once you've done that make sure Band-in-a-Box is closed and delete the files intrface.bbw and mysetup.dk from your bb folder. This will return many settings to their factory defaults. You can save a backup of those files in case you want to restore your previous settings. If you still aren't seeing any activity on the keyboard after doing that, and you don't have any other programs open, and you have selected the input driver in the MIDI Driver Setup.... I'm not sure what else it could be.
