I've been having a lot of problems starting up the HD BB 2010 version lately. My computer says it does't recognize the Hard Drive sometimes. By the previous posts, everyone has said that it could be my USB cable and I thought that was true until today when I stumbled upon a fix. My printer was also connected to the Coomputer via a USB connection and happened to look up and it was turned on. By instinct, I turned it off because I wasn't using it. When I did this, the BB HD booted up immediately. Evidently there is a setting somewhere on Windows that will only allow me to access so may USB ports. I have no problem booting the BB HD 2010 up now. Life is funny that way. Hope this helps someone out there in BB land.

It's probably the total power allocated to the two USB ports. We already know that some of the USB drives that PG Music uses require maximum power from a USB port.
You can see the power allocation if you go to Device Manager.

Yes, I would agree with Matt's assessment here.
Very likely that the printer was also drawing a bit of power from the USB port and that turning it off allowed more current to go to the USB drive.
This is actually a problem with computer design and not the hard drive nor the printer.
You may be able to solve such a problem by obtaining a good quality *powered* USB hub and connect your peripherals through the hub.

A hub should always be powered. Otherwise it splits up what little power is allocated to one USB port among the devices on the hub.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will look into buying the hub. I have 5 USB inputs on my computer. It's an IBM Aptiva 2.2 gigahertz. One powers the mouse, another powers the keyboard, another powers the printer. The other two are on the front of my computer and are free to plug anything else into it. You know, this is probably why my I POD wouldn't work, sometimes. The hub is a good idea. Thanks again, any recomendations on model?

Mine is a Belkin, nothing special about it except it has two ports on top, which are convenient for flash drives.
