If you can get past the nasty audio -- and any possible latency/sync problems, you can get an smaller cable to go at the end of the adaptor such that the heavy adaptor is further down the line from the jack and the jack only has the weight of the standard 1/8" mini jack from that cable hanging on it.

But if you are serious about the recordings, you should get an aftermarket USB recording quality sound device with good quality built in mic preamp.

The mic input on these computers wasn't really designed with music making in mind. it is for spoken voice.
