But we give Ritalin for ADD/ADHD. This kid couldn't possibly have ADD and have enough focus to learn to play like that. Manicky, well, maybe, a little. I would rather say "enthusiastic." And one of the last things you would want to give for mania is Ritalin.

my understanding was that hyperactivity and ADHD are often part of the same package, and that the reason why ritalin works is metaphorically like overlaying 2 pieces of window screen ... each piece of screen has a pattern created by the "frequency" of the fibers... but if you put 2 pieces together an entirely new pattern emerges based on the intersections of the 2 grids. The new pattern ALWAYS has a lower "frequency" (distance between the elements of the new grid) than does either of the original grids. (pattern is called a "moire"... in musical terminology it might be related to a harmonic)
Therefore, by speeding up a hyperactive kid, you slow him down with a new lower frequency brain wave.
That may be total bull, but that's how it's been described to me. I have no way to test the theory, except with screen.. and I have no way of knowing whether or not the metaphor has any substance.
Accurate or not, it's an interesting thought.

Hey, that's a very picturesque, even poetic, metaphor -- I hadn't heard it before. Whether it makes scientific sense or not, as you are aware, is anybody's guess. Here is a little recent summary which sketches the 'state of the art.' http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/06/080624115956.htm.All I know is, it works, helping to focus attention and improve concentration and cognition -- "coordination" is a good word, from the article. Just a thought, though. Don't mix up the hyperactivity of ADHD with the hyperactivity of mania -- they are completely different animals. In recent years (as medical fads come and go), there have been some bad cases of mistaking, and treating, one entity for the other.

LOL. No apologies necessary. I've actually played on NPR via WV Public Radio several times.
What's hilarious is the video won't play for me. It just cuts in and out. None of the other videos on the site will play either. Too bad. There were a couple of other videos on there I would liked to have seen.
All I have against NPR is that their primary funding is from our tax dollars and their news reporting is totally biased toward the far left. If it was privately funded or a commercial enterprise, I wouldn't mind. I don't like my money being used to support an agenda I don't agree with. But that obviously happens to all of us through various gov agencies. Not much we can do about it.
I just said that to point out why I personally don't like NPR news. The music quite often is very good. But I definitely don't want to get into a political discussion.
The only reason I bothered commenting is that you mentioned me by name in your original post, so I thought I would state the reason for my dislike of NPR.

Thanks. I agree. I Love the music, but I hate the political bias. UNBIASED means that more than one point of view is presented in fair ratios. The fact that one point of view is presented, another point of view is suppressed, and it is all sponsored by tax dollars is very disturbing to me.

I just remember the relief as I drove I75 from North of Detroit to Key West when I could finally get NPR. Otherwise it was Ye-haw all the way.
Of course I am sitting here in my huge fluffy white housecoat, on my 4th coffee listening to Mozart. (My new CD of music he wrote for Masonic Lodges, I'm working on next years university course in advance..have to write an arrangement for different instruments than in the original score with at least 6 parts.)
Someone could please turn off winter. The first of the spring birds have arrived, the very early ones. 4 weeks to robins I think.

I have to giggle, you ask for someone to turn OFF winter, and yet, here I am in the Pacific Northwest, wondering when someone is going to turn it ON!
We're supposed to be looking at like the high 50's or low 60's by this weekend, which I find hysterically funny since the 'Winter Olympics' are just up the road (120 miles).
Yet, the Southern U.S. is being pummeled with snow and cold temps.
Come on over to Vancouver, watch the Olympics, and warm up!

Well its about 15F today, got 3 cm of snow yesterday. I have P.A.D. and once my feet are cold it can take days to warm them up. Actually sat on the beach in Cuba once with blue cold feet. Had to ingest Havana Club to cure it. You put coke in it to make a float on top. 90 percent Havana Club, once ice cube and a 1/2 inch of coke. Cuba Libre.

The political system that has been in place in my voting years in the US has been ridiculously co-opted by special interests, both conservative and liberal / socialist and capitalist. Both parties have their saints and sinners. I enjoy many, many shows on NPR as well as PRI: Car Talk (though they run my former employer unfairly into the ground), A Way With Words, All of Bob Boilen's stuff (the guy hosting the tiny desk concert), etc. I've never donated to them because of similar hesitations mentioned above - but I know that because of their long fund-raising drives and the amount of corporate sponsorship, that it really wasn't my tax dollars being spent on stuff that I don't want it spent on. There a whole heckuva lot more in the public schools that is being taught that my dollars go directly to that I don't agree with, and I still send my kids there. Anyway, I'm glad NPR is around for just the sort of audible pleasure that this tiny desk concert provides, and for the good medicine of a good laugh I get from Click 'n Clack on Car Talk and a whole lot more.

Scott: Thank you for your heartfelt and accurate post. I had thought about doing the very same thing, but I gave it up, knowing that some of these people are simply ineducable -- it's a waste of time. To them, NPR is simply another kommonist plot, and the only "fair and balanced" news (snark) comes from Fox. I just noticed, though, that Beck ran four shows last week in the UK with absolutely no advertisers. He has lost over a hundred sponsors recently, and it can be hoped that Hannity is next. Be well, and watch out for the tea puddles.

UPDATE: here’s a list of NPR’s sponsors by percentage: 31% from listeners in the form of pledges, memberships, and other donations 20% from businesses via corporate underwriting 11% from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which is federally funded* 10% from licensee support 9% from foundations and major gifts 5% from local and state governments, and 14% from all other sources.
