When you switch styles, BiaB will often bug you to change the melody feel. This is almost never helpful, especially in Latin jazz, switching between swing and straight styles constantly.

I thought it was once possible to turn the prompts off, but now I can't find the switch. Does anybody know if those prompts can be killed, and how?

Thanks.

Not sure what you are looking for.

There is Melody, Edit Melody Track, and then several Humanize choices.
There is the Opt. button (not the Opt menu) and a checkbox for Triplet Resolution (Swing), but that only affects notation.
There is the Prompt with Preview checkbox in the upper right of the Select Style dialog box.

I want to eliminate the prompt box that appears automatically when you switch from a swing jazz style to a straight-8 (maybe Latin or pop) one. It flashes as soon as you pick your new style, and it says "OK to change melody to ****** feel". There is no question mark, but the box is helpfully labeled "Question".

That screen has a companion that asks if you want to expand or contract the song. No, of course, you don't. The expansion/contraction pop-up is easily defeated in the first page of the options, and also by the "Prompt w/Preview" box you mention.

But this one about changing feel persists.

EDIT:

I remember that, but I haven't seen it in a very long time.

I became hopeful as soon as you said you were having trouble seeing what I meant. Since you make so much Latin jazz, you're a natural victim for it. But you clearly hadn't thought about that screen in a while. What I am hoping is that you somehow turned that SOB off about 11 years ago and haven't thought about it since.

Maybe I'll blunder onto it, or maybe somebody else has done it recently enough to remember.

Many thanks.

Allis, that's exactly what I was thinking, but around Christmas I reset to factory settings a few times. I do keep a separate file listing all the personal preferences I like, but this is not on there. I also still have a pretty good memory. Sorry.

That's the first time I've ever been called a 'natural victim'. Thanks, I guess.

If this helps, I just don't use styles anymore. I choose separate Real Tracks & Drums as needed, and go from there. That's the main reason I would not have seen this in a long time.

Yes, not using styles is the reason it's not getting to you. Glad you mentioned it.

As for being a natural victim: These style prompts occur every time one switches between a swing and a straight style and vice versa. Nobody does that half as often as a Latin jazz composer. If anybody would be pestered, it should be you. Except you're not. But I am.

Lately, I have been arranging many boleros for a little band. So I've been seeing that dumb window 30 times a day, at best breaking up the quick flow of things; sometimes I click hastily wrong on it and run into actual setbacks. So as an experienced natural victim now, I know what I'm talking about.

My guess is that it shouldn't be a posed question by the program because it's most likely hard wired to the style used at the time.
i think what they're meaning to say is that 'choosing this style will definitely result in the melody being 'straightened' or 'swung' feelwise.
Asking 'is that ok?' is not so much an option as such as a warning to quit should it not be ok to do the change.

Regards

Alan

No. Luckily, that's not so. If you experiment a little, you'll see.

The melody is definitely changed if you answer OK, and it is definitely left as-is if you decline. BiaB is not very delicate about such operations, and if you allow it, it will quantize everything to death and destroy your careful tuplets for no particular reason. One should always decline, which is why I don't even want to see that window any more.

Some melodies without tuplets or hard swing don't sound much different one way or the other, of course, but in that case the operation is not so much unwise as it is unnecessary.

This is actually quite a small matter, not a problem at all to many users. I'm greatly overemphasizing it by this point in the conversation.
