Long ago I went to a cultural festival of a people from Southeast Asia. Could have been Hmong, but I disremember just now. One of the demos was of leaf playing. Different technique from what is shown here. It seems the five "tones" of their language correspond to notes of a pentatonic scale. They can use they notes to convey words.

Romantic stories are told of young men serenading young women at night with just a leaf. Because of the correspondence between notes and words, the music is actually a conversation!

The leaf-playing developed into free-reed instruments such as sheng and sho, similar to our harmonica.
