This came out one night I was just messin' around with the electric - which I seldom do. Decided at the time it sounded pretty bad - so I just threw it in my "not so good file". I pulled it up again the other day and thought - maybe this would be okay as more of an acoustic style - so here we go. I didn't put much thought into the lyrics at the time either - but it gave me something to fiddle with the last couple of days. I guess I'll put in the "gettin' a little better file"

I like the song.

I think the vocals are too low. Obviously you're using a harmony, and I would keep the harmony tracks at, or a lower volume, but raise the lead vocal, because, to me, it doesn't stand out. It gets lost behind the harmonica and the guitar.

The ending is kind of abrupt. I would do a repeat of 'I'm a country boy' a couple of times and fade the ending, but that's me.

I think it has potential.

Gary

Hi Powderman, Way to go.
I really like this song and I agree that the vocal could come up a bit.
Try turning the volume very low and then listen to the song.
You will be surprised how you can hear things you couldn't when the volume is raised.
Just make sure that your voice is the sound you hear most.

Keep 'em coming

Best regards
michee

Well Powderman,

I'm glad you fished it out of the NOT-SO-GOOD bin, because it's a catchy little tune. I agree with others about the vocals being too far back. You have a good voice and it should be right up front.

Regarding song structure, I kept expecting a break of some kind, but it never came... The part where the harmony kicked in was very similar to the rest of the song, and my ears wanted to hear a changeup.

And my usual observation about songs is that the decoration (in this case, the harmonica) may add more of an accent if it appears sparingly as opposed to playing throughout the whole song. But those are very small things, and they speak more about what I like than it does about the quality of the song.

You have a very gentle singing style for a big ol' bear of a man, and you do a good job of matching the song to your voice. All in all it is a very enjoyable tune to listen to. Are you a performer, or do you write songs for your own enjoyment? I can imagine audiences really enjoying what you bring to the table.

Good song.

You should place an instance of audio compressor on your lead vocal track, use that to bring it out front.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the suggestions - I have pulled the vocals up - maybe too much now - it is hard to tell when you are listening to your own voice. For anyone interested new link is below.

Gary - you are right - the ending is a little lame - I'm going to be thinking about that.

Michee - I tried you technique with the volume down when I was making the changes - and Mac - I had compressed but maybe not enough - so I cranked on it some more.

Pat - actually this song is pretty much my life except - I played drums and sang when I was younger. I picked up the guitar a few of years ago - so I could entertain the grand kids.

Thanks for listening - Danny

Great job Mr Powderman. Ya'll are writing some great songs with Real Tracks. They really make a difference vs using midi. It is catchy little tune, way to go.

I totally agree.

You've got a great voice, Powderman. I wish that I could sing that deep. I must say your singing is getting more and more confident, too. I enjoy listening to you. The way I see things, you are really getting the hang of writing, recording and producing. I'm ready for your next one, now

Keep up the great work,
Noel

Super song Powderman! I’m glad you pulled this from your “not so good file” and polished it off. Great song, catchy tune, good lyrics, good backing tracks and it sounds much better with your voice more up front.

If I were to nit-pick it would be to change the ending. It’s too abrupt IMHO. Maybe a fad out as was suggested before my work, don’t know. The song is strong enough to stand on its own but for me a better ending would put it way over the top, i.e. just my $0.02 USD.

Keep up the great work.

Can't believe this actually started out in the not so good bin. It has a really nice "Come A Little Bit Closer" lilt and feel to it. Too bad there are no RT soloists with a Tex-Mex feel to them to run through this tune.

Really good job Rich. Should be possible to come up with a good ending now that RTs have holds. Perhaps even inserting an a or b substyle drum fill before a final 2 - 4 bar "hold" might do the trick of a smoother ending without having to go to a fade . . . . unless you've got a good repetitive lyric for the fadeout.

Good one. Ian

I agree with the comments about the vocal needing to be increased. Great lyrics. Nice melody!

Mario and Ian - thanks for the suggestions for the ending - now that I got things this far -I do need to do something with the ending. I've got to do some traveling for work this week - so I guess I will take a copy with me and work on it at night.

Robert - thanks for the comments

Hey P-Man. I like this. It's easy on the ears. Has a good story line to it. The harmony is nice too. I agree you need to bring your voice out some more along with the harmonies. They're too far back in the mix. I think it needs some guitar riffs or steel working in the background too. Last of all, fix the ending. It stopped too abruptly. Other than that it's great work. Good on ya Mate. Keep up the good work.

BTW this song is in the potentially great position in my book.

Russ - good neighbor - thanks for the comments. A couple of posts back I included a new link where I brought the vocals further to the front. I had been trying to keep it simple - maybe kept it too simple - I think I have a couple of tracks I rendered - one being steel guitar - I will have to give a listen and see what it does. I will be working on the ending for sure.

Take Care

These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
