Mac was gracious enough to take an mp3 of my song and remaster it for me. I can't believe what a difference he made.

I didn't know you could take an mp3 and make these kinds of changes. I'm very grateful to him for putting some new life in it.

To reiterate:

Quote:

It was recorded on a Tascam 4 track PortaStudio cassette and there was a lot of bouncing tracks going on. I played acoustic, electric, bass, sang lead and harmonies. No BIAB, loops or drum machine. No computer.

It is a pop/rock song.

I don't have the original in a form that I can change, so what you hear is what you get. No effects. $15 dollar Radio Shack microphone. I wrote it and recorded it 25 years ago.

If you have 4 mins to spare. please check out the remastered version:

Very cool, got it back after all these years. Nice song. Can you still perform it?

rharv,

Actually my guitar skills improved about tenfold after several more years of playing. I haven't been playing for the last 2 years or so, but I'm hoping to get back into it.

But my singing isn't any better.

So I guess the answer to your question is yes. LOL.

Every time I put my horn down for a couple years it takes me a while to get back into full swing.
Better get back at it pretty soon.

Tell me about it! It's a bummmer getting those callouses back and relearning things you used to be able to play with your eyes closed and half drunk. LOL.

After Stevie Ray Vaughn quit drinking and got himself "cleaned up", he said he was terrified the first show he had because he had never performed sober in his life.

I think he did some of his best work after that. Not that I'm taking his advice or anything. Hehe.

Bob.. do you still have the original to post for comparison? It would be interesting to see the difference made by mastering
(sounded very clear, BTW.. but now I don't remember what the original sounded like)

Pat,

It's on the same page. Lower right hand corner. One says remastered and the other doesn't. I left the old one on there for comparison.

Well done Mac & Bob

Well, it really wasn't finished yet. Still some harshness in places and a few other things I want to address, the noise from the mp3 codec, well, it is what it is.

Don't know if I can smooth it out a bit on the harshness thang or not yet, what is there was about an hour and a half with it last night, then the ears needed a rest.

If I listened to "Sweetest Personality" for an hour and a half, my ears would need a rest too! I was just so pleased with what you had done with a low quality, single track mp3 I gave you, I wanted to post it.

Already, you're the man! If you improve it even further, then I don't know what adjective or superlative to put on it.

I just wish I had your skills and your ear.

Hi Mac,

If you have some time on your hands, I've got about 60 songs that could use some improvement.

What you got is as far forward as I could push 'em. Remember, this is done from an mp3 file at 128kbps, I'm also convinced that he used a rather inferior codec and it was taken from something originally done with a cassette tape unit. What I had was basically two mono tracks in a stereo mp3 file. Lots of judicious use of both Multiband Compressor and Parametric EQ going on here to get what we could out of the thing. You overdo the number crunching and it goes from bad to worse, as it were. Only so much can be done and to my ears, this one is already overdone...

it am what it am,

Great song Bob.

Great mix Mac.

Whenever I get something stuck in the back of my throat, I dislodge it by drinking a beer.
It's called the Heineken Maneuver.

Poor Mac
Got posted before he was done and then is working with old tape to mp3 as source..
The mixing is done as of ten years ago.. I have worled with old tape like this and it is very difficult to imporove it much. Push a little too much and you start emphasizing the tape noise, grab a wrong frequency and the wow/flutter jumps up. Lots of issues to consider.

Not a lot Mac can do for the 'mix' per se, but the overall sound is what he is shooting for. Sounds pretty good for an old tape that has been mp3'd a few times now.

Bob should have ape'd the wave file so Mac had a better version to work with if they were 'serious' about it. I doubt this is that serious of a thing though. It's a nice song, worth rerecording in my eyes.
