Sorry if this is an easy question, but I couldn't find anything about it in the Help.

How do you record the audio from a VST instrument in RB? If I want to record the audio from my external hardware synth I just tell RB to record the input from my sound card. But audio produced by a VST... not sure what to do there. The MIDI from my controller (which I used to play the VSTi) gets recorded, but none of the resulting audio, which sort of defeats the purpose, does't it?

In Sonar, if the MIDI has already been recorded, you can either "bounce to track" or freeze it (both of which create an audio clip, as *if* you had recorded it live). There's also a setting that lets you REALLY record a VSTi's audio live, in realtime as you play...

RB does say, after I've pressed Record and played my VSTi, "Audio was also recorded, would you like to place it on track 10?" I click "Yes", but then nothing shows up on track 10. I guess it meant audio coming in from my external synth, which would be total silence, since I turned it all the way down to use it simply as a MIDI controller for the VSTi...

Okay, I got it. Dug around the forum a while and found a thread where a guy mentions right-clicking and choosing "Auto Convert Individual MIDI Track To Audio Track".

For anyone else who hasn't done this, do a search in Help for auto convert, and you'll see a result explaining this option (which is a new option, btw). There's also a topic on Rendering MIDI to Audio. I guess I was searching for the wrong word when I was searching "record" or "record VST". It's called RENDERING or CONVERTING, apparently.

The only problem now is, I'm not able to get the adjustments I make in my VSTi (vibrato, etc) to "stick" and to show up in the resulting audio track that RB converts it to. Any ideas on how to save the current VSTi settings so RB will convert it that way?

Will it 'play' the settings correctly?

If so, just "solo" the track, and use the 'merge to stereo command', then import the resulting file back in ..

You can still record the output from the DXiVSTi via your soundcard as you do with an internal synth.

This ain't new I've been using it from day one. Also was available in PT. My auto converted tracks are identical to the MIDI track.

@ Silvertones - Hmmm. I'm just going by what my Help file says: "This new command is accessible by right clicking on the track overview section of the Tracks window. This makes it very easy to convert a MIDI Track to an Audio Track. RealBand will automatically render using a DXi synth." (Maybe since I only got the Pro upgrade this time, it didn't give me an updated Help file...(?)

@ LynB - Did you mean external synth? As in, looping my audio output back into my soundcard's input, and recording? If not, how would I set the inputs and outputs in RB for what you had in mind?

@ rharv - No, any starting of playback will reset the rotator in B4II (organ synth). The closest I can come is to start playback and then quickly call up B4II and switch on the rotator before it's that instrument's time to play in the song. (Fine for one little switch - rotator - but not for more complex adjustments.)

It think the help files are a little out of date.

Can you save a preset with the rotator enabled??

That would seem to be the easiest way if it works. Then just load that preset before rendering..

Ugh, I've been trying all night to save the sound as a preset, but the B4II manual is so unhelpful. The buttons shown are different from what I've got in the updated VSTi itself, and I can't find any way of simply saving a NEW PRESET. Anything I click either saves the sound over an existing factory preset sound, or else doesn't show up at all, or else saves the entire list as a new bank or something. And even when it saves and loads a sound over a previous one, RB still always resets the rotator. Pathetic. I might ditch the whole VST/RB approach, and just use RB to generate some RealTracks, then export them, and then get the hell out of there.

Bummer
Does the plugin behave differently elsewhere?
Is there a 'reset conctrollers' message in the song or GM reset message that may be causing it?

Running out of ideas and suspecting plugin.

The B4 Rotator is not a static setting when calling upon it to play back MIDI files.

It is controlled with either CC commands embedded in the MIDi file, or use of the spacebar, or modwheel, depending upon how you have the B4 software configured.

Try embedding modwheel commands of "all the way off -- zero" for one position of the Rotor switch, and "all the way on -- 127" for the other, Fast position.

Hi Bobby,

You can record any output via your soundcard what ever the source.

If you are using a VSti then there is a peculiarity in comparison to DXi with saving Presets which I have referred to the Development Team several times. Above the the VSi Panel you will see the PGMusic Buttons to Load and Save Presets. I have found that to Save a detailed set up it is necessary to use the PGM Button which opens up the dropdown list of presets but when you select any preset an MS Folder is opened for you to use. I have tended to use a separate folder for each VSTi and Save the presets there under the name of the song. To Load use the PGM Load button as required. This is not as useful as being able to add to an exsisting Bank, but works well.
