Hey Ray, so if I get one of those gizmos, and add it to my system using a Ketron SD2, what else do i need to get good results. Given how cheap computers are now |'m not against adding another system, but ...well, the wife with only the silver flute can get old after a bit and I'd like more variations.

Hi Jazzmandan,
Forgot to mention it: The registration is in the home page, right/second column (called Identification), click "register." The process is pretty painless. Hope this helps:-)

John, I hope your wife doesn't read your posts!! LOL. The EWI 4000s is a self contained synth and midi controller. I use it with the patches from Patchman Music. I just plug it into an amp and I'm good to go. I'm thinking of getting the AKG Guitar Bug wireless setup. I like the sounds from Patchman, so I have no need to use another synth with it. You can set it up with sax, oboe, flute or brass fingerings. Check out: www.patchmanmusic.com Later, Ray

Hey J.K., I have the WX5. Since you have both, what do you think about the comparison to the EWI?

My wife has hidden stuff from me for 25 years. The father in law told me at christmas that she was a virtuoso bassoon player and that she turned down 2 offers to play in orchestras because she's "Demure". I know she plays clarinet, sax, oboe, english horn, trumpet, cornet, baritone, violin, recorder, and clarinet. She has 2 music degrees, and is a couple of courses short of a Masters in Music. She also did her degree in piano, and then took the courses to teach band at high school. Says her favorite thing in band was percussion.
I on the other hand took a hundred bucks of lessons on a 120 bass piano accordion, and then about 5 months of piano where I made her drop Mary Had a Little Lamb for Love Story and how to chord. Some Baptist lady wore a hat in her house and a knee length dress in the 60's and was the church organist.
Then 10 years later pulled out the accordion, played a moog in a band, and bought a Wurlitzer piano that was chrome and black and had little reeds or something.
Now, I'm in the old age, and found out with the Bose gizmo I can really sing ok, and am putting together the touring package.
We both play baritone in a Brass Band, British Style, and we play some gigs with flute and keys. Due to the fact that every set has some 12/8 and 6/8 stuff in it I've never really taken Band in a Box on some serious outside drive, other than play the odd open mic thing.
So she is being made to retire in a year, and I'm putting together the touring package. The last time we did anything like that was in Lake Chapala Mexico, and we played 3 nights at a country club, and they want us back. So between our 3 keyboards, sound system, the flute, the horns, I want to expand the repetoire.
Matt's point is valid. I'm a newbie at the technology, and want to have something we both can play, and is versatile, but does not need a lot of fooling around. If she can play all those instruments, well...we should be good to go.
And we need more fun. Heck knows this advanced arthritis thing is driving me nuts.

I haven't taken a look at the offered files yet, but JKChang is to be commended for offering these drills like that.
Those who are wishing to improve their improvisational skills, those needing practice aids, teachers looking for materials, this looks to be a good thing.
Thanks, JKChang!

John, physically the WX5 is the easiest 'horn' to play, by far, fingering and breathing-wise.
It does take quite a bit of 'fooling around' though, to get the settings just right. I had a lot of help when I was first starting out by Notes Norton's site, where he has a full page on the proper adjustments and settings for the WX5. It is not a slam dunk by any means, and you've got several long cords and a sound module with a power brick.
Don't know about the Akai units.

The wife just bought a brand new Mini Cooper so she's put me on a budget. LOL. Right. I'm going to continue looking...the only fingering I know is trumpet, never played anything that has keys. Pianos, keyboards, accordion and horns. I'd like to be able to play the thing, in that I don't really work. At least not hard. Seeing pension money sitting in my band account is soothing.

Hi Matt, I think both Akai & Yamaha's models are nice with some differences in design aesthetic. I like EWI 4000's built-in analog synthesizer and its touch sensors are fun to play with. (Plus it runs on AA batteries, pretty convenient). WX5, to me, is a really fine pick-it-up-and-play digital instrument. It takes little getting-to-know-you time and I thought the layouts of octave keys are very interesting designs. Interestingly, Yamaha's WX5 is exhibited in MOMA in New York....which surprised me a little. I guess that I was expecting to see EWI 1000?

Thank you, JK.
John, the Akai is supposed to have a EVI (electronic valve instrument) mode, to use trumpet fingering. The WX5 does not, but a flute player would have no problem with the WX5.

The EWI 4000s is ready to go out of the box. Just plug into an amp. I walk around the house practicing with ear buds plugged into the EWI. It can be wireless also. I'm thinking of getting the AKG Guitar Bug wireless. I use the EVI mode, trumpet fingerings. BIAB gives me my back-up trio. Later, Ray

Note: The Xtra Styles require the UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, or Audiophile Edition of Band-in-a-Box®. (Xtra Styles PAK 20 requires the 2025 or higher UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, or Audiophile Edition. They will not work with the Pro or MegaPAK version because they need the RealTracks from the UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, or Audiophile Edition.
