Does anybody know what is the maximum quantity of MIDI events that can be imported from a MIDI file for a 1bar pattern and for a 2bar-pattern ?
I'm working on the creation of a MIDI style Rumba Flamenca, for which I have to import a 2bar pattern for guitar part. There are many and many 16th & 32th notes in the guitar track in the MIDI file, so when I import the data from MIDI file, only the first bar and the beginning of the second bar are filled. The only workaround I found is to manually fill the pattern with the missing data...

I think BIAB is 480 PPQ so:
480 x 4 = 7680 per channel

I thought BIAB is 120 PPQ?

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure BIAB is 120 PPQ (parts per quarter note), so you should easily be able to handle 32nd notes.

So it should easily handle 32nd notes, but not 64th notes on exact boundaries.

1/4 note = 120 parts
1/8 note = 60 parts
1/16 note = 30 parts
1/32 note = 15 parts
1/64 note = 7.5 parts (that's where it starts to break down)

I don't know why you MIDI file is not importing correctly; I can't remember if BIAB quantizes imports to a certain boundary, which I suppose could affect it. Also, given that it's a guitar part, is it possible that your MIDI file has CC's for pitch bends, which can result in many additional notes depending on how the pitch bend was defined?

Just a thought.

I've encountered downloaded MIDI files, that, while they sound and play quite well using a MIDI sequencing playback program, the person who created the file did not play to the click and thus the recorded notes are "all over the place" as regards the bars and notes MIDI boundaries. For example, someone playing ahead of or behind the beat can get too far away from that and the notes played can end up being part of the next bar or the preceeding bar as far as the MIDI quantization goes.

Other times someone may have simply turned off the click and proceeded to play and record to MIDI as if it were an audio recorder. These kind of files are typically going to be useless for attempts at editing, etc. without resorting to long manual sessions in an attempt to straighten that out. And you will lose the feel of the piece almost certainly.

John points out some other good possibilities above, too.

What always gets me is that people don't seem to bolame the free MIDI downloaded file for these kind of problems. They typically blame the host software they are trying to use on it instead.

In addition to what John and Mac have said remember that Rumba Flamenca guitar parts include very rapid arpeggios as the guitarist strums with all four fingers in rapid succession. (I can’t recall the terminology that right now – CRS.) Anyway you will NOT be able to capture that using MIDI at 120 PPQ. If you have the latest version of BiaB you also have RealBand. You may want to use that as it has a PPQ of 960 and higher. The higher the PPQ the subtler note timing variations you can have.

As far I know, BIAB is set to PPQ=120.
The MIDI file is really a sequence, not a song freely played without tempo consideration. It's a song from the Gipsy Kings.
When I import the data from the MIDI file, there are only notes events , no patch events, no CC events, ...
I import 2 bars of MIDI file containing each 75 notes, that is a total of 150 notes to import.
When I import the file, I get a message : "MIDI file imported successfully 149 events".
In stylemaker, the 1st bar is complete and is played as in the MIDI File. No problem.
The 2nd bar is not complete. It seems there is like a limitation to 96 notes for the 2 bars?

I believe you are passed the limit of what 120 PPQ can play back.

Could you upload the midi file so we can take a look at it?

Probably out of limit.
I will sent the MIDI file in question to PG support people for their own investigation.

Proceeding on the sometimes shakey premise that there is 'no such thing as a stupid question,' I must ask ...

When 'import' is used in this thread with respect to sections of a midi file being entered into a style maker cell, is there actually a way to 'import' sections of a midi file from within BIAB, or is this really meaning 'copy and paste' into the cells? I can't find anything in the Manual under the stylmaker chapter that describes 'importing,' other than of the entire midi file for part and track selection. It would certainly be great if you could loop play sections of individual tracks and somehow directly 'import' those sections 'track by track' to tylemaker cells ... similarly to how you loop play sections of the over all file to designate parts and fills.

Also, when doing this in 'copy and paste' fashion, again, do people do this from inside BIAB? If all the multi-track midi data for an imported file is on the melody track, how do you select the midi data just for the track you want to 'copy paste' to the stylemaker since in the piano roll or notation windows all the data is super imposed?

Thanks.

After analysis by PG people of the MIDI file and the style I sent last night, it is stated that everything was OK in my settings during the MIDI importation to BIAB. In fact, as was my conclusion, there is a limit inside BIAB, and the quantity of MIDI events I wanted to import is too much for BIAB. The workaround is to enter the same chord every bar, since we can't get in this case a full 2bar-pattern.
