If I have a short section of a track I want to be softer than the rest, is selecting the section and processing a gain change ok, or should I record the volume change in the mixer? What are the minuses in applying gain change rather than volume change?

thanks

I guess it depends on whether you want the change to be permanent or not. Gain change is destructive. Duplicate your track, move the original to the bottom and then make the gain change to the duplicate.

You could go into the event editor and change the volume from there. Select the notes you want to change the volume on click controller select controller 7 and give it a number change. It will appear as VOL, then however many measures you want, do the same thing again to change it back to the volume you want from there on.

I use gain change a lot. It is permanent, and once done, doesn't take any resources to accomplish.

The mixer moves use resources, and there is a lag that is equal to the buffer size of the audio stream. Obviously smaller when using ASIO than MME.
However, when you do the final merge down, there is absolutely no lag, so getting this set just right can be a little tricky if the section is a continuously playing part. If it is a part on its own, with a break before/after it is easier to do.
I like to hard write most changes like this.

Just another view on it.

Can't you do this with an automation curve(s) in Realband? Easier to control than mouse fader recording or gain change and it's not a permanent change.

Yes you can enter CC7 data via the Piano Roll Window, BUT the audio is not visable in this window and you have difficulty using the Piano Roll with the Audio Edit and Bars Windows at the same time. Best to go by ear and experiment with the entries.

I guess I'm just used to using automation on whatever track content is there - midi piano roll, or audio. Just the way that most sequencers work these days. Very quick to mix fades and section volume changes on individual tracks whether or not they are midi or audio. If I was an RB customer, I'd put this on the wishlist right away. In my DAW, Volume and pan fades via automation seem to use no appreciable difference in resource usage on either midi or audio tracks - I believe because of where the developer chose to place the automation in the audio stream.

I guess I just assumed that was the de rigeur standard way of doing automation.

It would be AWESOME if development could put the mouse-drawn VOLUME ENVELOPES right on the Bars in the Tracks View.

Mac, it is awesome. Plain and simple. I don't even use a 'mixer view' in my DAW. It doesn't even have one and you know what, it's completely unnecessary once you get used to seeing volume envelopes on top of tracks.

I'm pretty sure Mac has seen this.. and knows how awesome it is to have that ability when mixing.

I have found the mixer screen to be less and less useful myself, if only there were a way to quickly (and intuitively) get to the AUX and MASTER FX area without the mixer. To be honest I like the dials for the AUX send on the mixer, with the ability to see the same for related tracks, and a few other unique views there in the mixer, so it is handy at times. I don't think it's 'completely unnecessary', but I do see what you are getting at. A lot can be done in one screen. It has to be done carefully though, or that one screen can be quite a challenge to new users.

rharv,

in the DAW I use, there are unlimited AUX sends - it just goes into the signal chain like an effect by itself as a send slider with an identification number, then you put a return on a new track where you place the effect chain you want to have returned. On the 'Master FX', you can just do the same kind of thing. You can put effects before or after the master volume/pan fader.

If your brain things in signal flow, it works well. If it doesn't then it can be confusing.

And BTW, my earlier post was not meant to be a slam against Mac.

I'm also aware of other DAW software like that Scott, I was just saying there are times when I like the mixer view, but would appreciate some shortcuts to certain features.

I know you weren't slamming Mac, and am pretty sure he knows that too. I do think you assume some of us use only this program and are not aware of others which isn't true. Because we prefer it over others doesn't mean we don't have others. I have many other DAW programs, and am quite sure Mac does too. They all have their strengths.

If one is familiar with mixers it can help visualize signal flow. I'm sure it is very handy for many users.
