I just bought an Acer Aspire X1300 running Vista SP1. Been fighting getting the right drivers for the on-board audio because I couldn't capture the CD audio. Finally punted and just ran the PC output through the Tape Input on my mixer so I could run the audio back into the PC on the Line In. On-board audio is "Realtek High Definition Audio".
Reinstalled PT12. On the Options, Midi Devices, there are no Input Drivers. It still captures the Audio from the Line Input now (finally). Any idea why no hardware is showing up there? Any idea how I could simply record whatever sound is being played through the computer? Other suggestions? I'm trying to lay down an audio track and then add other audio tracks / vocals

Don't need a MIDI input driver, it is commonm not to have one.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

The realtek built in soundcard doesn't have any MIDI connect for an input, hence no drivers.
If you were to install a USB-to-MIDI device, then you should see the drivers for it listed in the input section.

I am having a similar problem. I am using PT11. My computer has the following system properties. Microsoft windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Pack 2 with AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 3000+ 1.81GHz and 384 MB of RAM. I am trying to record from my Yamaha PSR-290 via MIDI leads in to the computer and it's not recording anything on MIDI, just keeps saying Audio has been recorded and do I want to save it. In MIDI Devices (within Option) the only Input Driver I have in the window is USB Audio Device. I have the same available in the Output Driver window along with several others. I have tried changing some of th Output Drivers but to no avail. It's getting really frustrating. In the PT manual on page 8 Step One - MIDI Setup, it shows a picture of the Input Driver window which has 2 drivers in it: In USB MidiSport 1x1 and SB Live! MIDI Port [B800] I can't get either of these. Please can someone help me to record my own MIDI Music.
Sim Harding.

harding. post a pic somewhere of your driver set up in ptw preferences. also post a pic of available drivers. have you selected midi in/out drivers ?? i assume the trak your trying to record to is set as a midi trak. there are several aspects to be aware of .. choosing the right drivers in prefs. on the yamaha itself..what midi channel is it sending on. ?? (i dont use a yammie myself but ive heard psr's can be finicky to set up). for example if the yammie is sending on midi ch 1. try setting the midi channel on the trak your recording to as 1. drums are normally on ch 10.
an added note. 384 of ram might not be sufficient. youll need to run tests. cos xp itself needs ram. you might be fine useing just midi traks driving out to external midi modules.. but if you anticipate useing various plug ins and lots of audio traks etc etc, you might want to think bout adding more ram.
normally for a daw i recommend two drives. one for OS and one to record to. plus 2 gigs of ram is healthy. but monitor the situation as you progress useing your sempron. i once had a sempron a few years back, and when i went dual core my life became easier.
a question..in any song of yours what are the max no of midi n audio traks you would run, and max no of plug ins ?? your answert to that will dictate the type of pc needed. in summary give more details on your needs also.
retired puter engr....powertracks on amd......NICE ! "what is the black art of audio engineering ?" my silly songs...motagator.com/bmanning see my tips in the tips section.

To record MIDI you need to get the correct MIDI Input device.
Do not be concerned about the example in the manual. Every system will be different. If you are using a USB midi input, make sure it is connected to the MIDI Output of the synth. What goes out of the synth goes into the computer.. This gets everyone at least once. Make sure of connections.
Then, as a test, once you ahve the hookups correct, play the keyboard that is send ing the midi and watch the keyboard in PTW. You *should* see the notes you are pressing get dispalyed on the keyboard. If not, there is likely a hookup that is wrong somewhere. You can try to record anyway to verify if you think things are hooked up correctly.
The key is in selecting the right device and wiring it right. Also, as manning1 alluded to, make sure the track you are recording to (the one that is highlited) is a midi track. You can right-click under the track name to see what 'type' of track it is, you want MIDI, not audio.
The fact that PTW asked you to keep an audio take tells us no MIDI got thru to PTW.. either the hookup was wrong/ inactive, or the track being recorded to was an audio track. However, the fact that it asked to keep the audio take does not imply that the track was not MIDI. As a default, if you have a track set to MIDI, PTW will also record the audio 'just in case' and ask if you want it.
It is a 'side note' but 384meg of RAM is very minimal for XP. You will likely be able to record MIDI with it, but audio will likely cause issues. I suggest you go to the options-preferences area and turn off the option to "record audio too if the track is midi" It is an un-needed drain for you while working in MIDI.

Are these input and output drivers okay for MIDI use?
