Windows XP, BiaB 2010 build 294. Eiderol driver to/from midi (Yamaha Clavinova) keyboard.
Trying to record my own piano to, oh, let's say "Laura." Moderate bossa. No real tracks. No RealDrums. BiaB piano, guitar, strings all muted. Mostly spare playing with occasional very full block chord figures. Sounds fine through the instrument while I'm playing/recording.
However, several times during three choruses a whole chord is captured as lagging my actually played notes by 15 or more ticks, as shown by "edit-note" off the annotation view. Needless to say, it sounds sloppy. Repositioning notes is (a) laborious and (b) indicative that something's wrong with the program or the setup.
What's going on? Thanks for any help.
-Mel

Hey Mel,
I've been complaining about uneven midi in BIAB for years. My first version of BIAB was on Atari and the midi timing was SO good. I've never gotten that in later PC versions. Many people say they don't notice it, but I do and it really bugs me. So, here are a few tips I've put together that really help me>
1. MME is fine for putting chords in, printing lead sheets, auditioning songs etc. However, when it comes time to record midi parts (melody or solo) Good solid ASIO drivers are a must. This is pretty much the only way to get latency down below 12 ms.
2. Make sure you prep your computer for digital/midi recording. Internet services off, Virus programs disabled, Also make sure you go to your "My Computer" icon, right click, choose properties and then click the "Advanced" tab. Go to the "Visual Effects" tab, then choose "Adjust for best performance". Then click the "Advanced" tab and check "Background Services". This is the service that is used by ASIO. Also, make sure your HD is defraged. A good Registry cleanup program is a good idea.
3. No matter what interface you are using, it's always a good idea to search their website for the latest driver. BEFORE you install it, see if they have a User Forum, similar to this one. Look for Threads dealing with Drivers, or look up your model, see if anyone has had problems with the new driver. Make sure you know how to roll back the driver IF it is doing something bad to your system.
Finally, for those of you who still think the timing in BIAB is great, drop your BIAB midi file into your sequencer. Then choose a light quantize notes setting, you will be surprised how much tighter your song is! Ed

Sounds like something may be interrupting the MIDI data stream.
Shared IRQ with the MIDI to computer device, something like that.
Background program may be doing it also.
For the record, I enjoy excellent MIDI tracking and recording from both MIDI keyboard controllers and MIDi guitars here. Give or take the 120ppq resolution of BiaB, I don't experience such lags or interruptions. So it is indeed a possible goal to attain.

I have no issues with this. Roland / rogers W50 using Edirol usb midi cable 1 in 1 out.
MME drivers. Both the Dxi VSC and the outboard Ketron do it without complaint.
I've seen hundreds or thousands of users show up here and they are having problems.
Part of it is a learning curve.
Dumb down the setup, get a 6 bar song, and muck with things until it works.
Because it will.
I've used a Yamaha keyboard too, no problems. I can play the actual instrument, or the soft synth, or hard synth, and as anyone here will tell you, I'm an intellectually challenged Canuck who types too fast.
Wait. I'm a fast talking smooth drinking..never mind.
When it comes to real music, take my wife...please.
Whoops she's gone to the gym. I should never have said we waited supper for her because she's the hosta$$ with the most..(Ducks and runs for cover..)
I bet not one 'Merickan knows that we measure our women with axe handles. LOL.

"Hundreds or thousands?"
Not hardly.
Maybe it *seems* that way at times, but consider that someone without troubles is unlikely to take the time to post, "No problems at all here!"

The midi sync thing comes up at least twice a week n'est pas?
That, my tech friend, you should write as a wiki page. I just tinker until stuff works. That register you virus thing took me a whole year of hair tearing. My computer would be sitting over on the table, and then goes chuck chuck and I glare. Then once 2 of them were doing it I found out I had to remove that virus software. Now I can't remember which one it was...
ah. Macafee.
3 out of 4 Macs are no good. Big ones Macafee and Macin..as long as it's not an apple. Gives me heartburn.

This is a stutter, not a sync problem.
I'd like to know more info about the OP's system, MIDI interface, MIDI output device, etc. in hopes of helping find a solution.

Hello Mel, Quote:

So it sounds like this is happening when your keyboard is sending alot of MIDI events at once. Is it only notes, or are there some other controllers as well? Check the Melody track event list. What are you using as your MIDI output driver? Can you see the delay if you watch the MIDI Monitor, filtered to show only computer MIDI input.

Lots of notes... nine-or-ten-note block chords. If there's anything else going on, it's only the sustain pedal. If by MIDI output driver you mean from the PC to the keyboard, that's the edirol driver supplied by PGMusic and the M-Audio Uno USB hardware. Doesn't happen every time. BTW, I stopped all antivirus/malware software and disabled the communications adapter. I'll let you know if I see anything by watching the filtered MIDI monitor. Quote:
