I always accepted it as a 2 step operation - change the pitch... cut the gain boost down..no control over this in the dialogue, wondering if it's a function of the wave record level in the windows mixer.

Hi axelrod, If the pitch-shift was to a higher pitch, it is also possible that psychoacoustics has come into play. As a general rule of thumb, the "average" person's hearing is more sensitive to higher pitches than lower pitches. In terms of mixing, this means that the volume of a low pitch needs to be larger (in terms of dB) so that it sounds the same volume as a higher pitch. Thus if you pitch-shift a lower pitch upwards, its volume will probably be such that it makes the sound seem louder by comparison to the other sounds. Thanks Noel- but any pitch shift I do is to raise a flat vocal a quarter tone, and not enough to make that difference...but I greatly appreciate the contribution and the insight-

Use the Graphic Waveform view to compare the levels. On the left side of the view will be a scale that shows the dB either side of zero crossing. Look there to see if amplitude has changed from any process.
It may just be that the Record Input fader of your soundcard is not set to the proper position such that "What goes in is what comes out" VU-wise.
Easy enough to experiment on that front.

Thanks Mac- in experimenting, I can't see an ability to affect a volume change thru the soundcard mixer. When I alter both master playback and record settings -even to their extremes, it doesn't seem to affect the outcome.
Do you know the internal path RB takes for audio edits? If what comes in ,comes out...I would expect that for other audio editing functions as well.

Well, I have never used the pitch change algo, so it may well be that there is a gain change involved with it. (If they don't sing in tune, I tend to send 'em packin' with advice as to what the woodshed is all about...)
Since you've performed the experiment with the mixer applet, we can rule that out and that only leaves the alternative.
Still, you have a workaround by using the gain change algo on it, so I'd say, "Git R Done" and maybe post on the Wishlist forum about that.
