Only after a few days after ordering my Ketron SD2 from PGMusic it arrived at my doorstep - another 10/10 from me to PG and team.

Unpacked it and - well a power supply with a USA/Canadian mains tranny plug. Never mind, these things are meant to try us. Dug into my travel bag and found a Ozzie KORJO multi-purpose Euro, Asia and US etc conversion plug. It worked fine.

Also ordered and received a MIDISPORT Uno USB midi connectors plus setup disc.
But instructions do not mention either Vista or Windows 7 drivers. Went to their web site- Noop no driver for Vista 64bit apparent.

Rummaged around an old box of connectors and found my old Edirol UM-1 USB/Midi interface connector. Went to the web site and yes Vista 64bit driver available.

Connected the Edirol USB end to the computer and the other end to midi IN on the SD2 (the other midi out cable is not used). Also connected RCA audio cables on the SD2 to the input audio on my Roland UA-4FX interface (that’s also connected via a USB cable to the comp). My output audio on the UA-4FX in turn goes to my amp and speakers.

Now to BIAB and click “Opt “-> “Midi /Audio driver Setup” menu and un-clicked the “Use VST/Dxi Synth” and then highlighted the “Edirol UM-1 MIDI” listed in the output section and the UA-4FX in the input section.
Loaded up an PGMusic midi file. Yes the blue light on the SD2 started flashing but not very loud stuff was coming out of the speakers. Oh, of course there’s a volume control on the SD2 pushed it full on and wow what a blast.

The sound that was coming out was outstanding (much better than Mac’s examples played back on my other computer connected to the internet with much smaller speakers). It breathes new life into those midi backings. OK the SD2 is 10 times more expensive than the very good soft synth available but it’s more than 10 times better in fidelity, expression and presence in my opinion. Excellent.

To get a stereo wav file of the output of the SD2 I went to the BIAB menu “Audio”-> “Record Audio”. BIAB will ask for the input and in my case I checked it was the UA-4FX input. You need to play the whole song thru and you’ll get all instruments on a stereo track. If you just want a track of one instrument set all the other instruments except the one you want to mute and play thru the song. It will store the song wave file in the current song folder with the name TEMPMAIN.wav. (It would be nice if I could choose the name and what folder the wavefile is to go to). I did one instrument only and when finished just dragged and dropped the wav file into a Sonar track without a hitch.

(Thanks John Ford -jford for sharing your particular SD2 setup with me)

Cheers F

******************NB******************** The UM-1 midi interface is not required with the UA-4FX setup unless the SD2 is used as direct output device.
See below for correct settings.

Hi, Frank -

I'm glad it worked out for you. I love my Ketron. MIDI sounds so much better now.

Why couldn't you use the available MIDI connect on the Roland UA-4FX?

MIDI Out of the UA can still go to the SD2, though...

OK what you are indicating is that the UM-1 is not required because the UA-4FX takes that role.

So UA-4FX connected to the comp with a USB. Audio out of the SD2 to the UA-4FX audio IN. Midi OUT from the UA-4FX to the Midi IN on the SD2.
Audio OUT from the UA-4FX to the amp audio IN. My keyboard to the midi IN of the UA-4FX.

Yes that works. Thanks Mac.

I have my keyboard setup
1. Direct to the Mixer if I want that sound.
2. Into the computer and on the thru channel back out to the Ketron.

I then put a note at the start of the song about keyboard settings.

ie. Turn volume on 3 to 12 (meaning to or 12 o'clock) so that would be the patch on my keyboard NOT going to the thru and the thru volume setting would be zero.

or..Turn Volume on 3 to zero, using thru...and I'd have that setting saved...

Depends on your keyboard and how many of it's sounds you like.
